http://abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/09/25/2042547.htm?section=business

Quote:
Bruck Textiles employee and union delegate, Maurie Mahoney, wrote to his local newspaper saying WorkChoices is denying his wife and other company workers a fair wage.

The union says he has since faced disciplinary action at Bruck Textiles, which could result in his dismissal.

Quote:
ACTU president Sharan Burrow said the company's action reflected John Howard's Australia, which had workers living in fear, being bullied and intimidated.

"An employee representative told they are not allowed to speak to other workers, not allowed to speak to their union, threatened with the sack,'' she said.

"Why? Because he has the courage of a hard-working Australian to stand up and say, `It's not fair that workers haven't had a pay rise since 2004.'

Another typical union beat up. Very careful wording, no where do they actually state that the investigation or pending disciplinary action is because of the letter. They just say he wrote a letter complaining and now he's facing an investigation and let people infer the link for themselves.

And as far as the heading about workchoices removing freedomn of speech, you neglected to quote this part out of the same newspaper article.

Quote:
The Federal Government says no worker should fear that their job is under threat simply from writing to a newspaper.

A spokesman for the Workplace Relations Minister Joe Hockey says his office has asked the Workplace Ombudsman to monitor the case.

I see the latest Gallop poll due out tomorrow in The AGE/SMH shows a 60.5% to 39.5% TPP to the ALP.
I don't think we need to worry to much about WorkChoices anymore, it will be gone shortly

stui, instead of getting the ombudsman to "monitor" this case, the Feds should step in and act.
But of course they are secretly hoping it will go to court and the employer will win.
This is a huge attack on our freedom of speech. If you cannot see that then I feel sorry for the future of your children.

How should the feds step in and act if they already said it wasn't able to be done under the legislation?

And assume for a second it wasn't about workchoices. Lets say he wrote a letter to the newpaper saying his employers were a bunch of pricks because they wouldn't promote him. Or another topic criticising his employer.

Is that still freedom of speech? Is he still able to publically denigrate his employer without potentially facing disciplinary action?

Deflection, deflection, deflection.
Little Johnny has taught you well grasshopper...............

He did not abuse his employer.
He wrote an honest letter about how the current legislation is stopping himself and his workmates from negotiating a better deal.
He has suffered at work because he exercised his freedom of speech.

Again, if you cannot see that then I fear for your children's future.

So you've seen a copy of the letter or are you just taking the unions version as verbatim?

Can you give me a more specific reference? The name of the paper and the date, please.

The newspaper containing the letter or the newspaper containing the article quoting the unions view?

Rudd will not remove work choices, he will modify it. He is as right wing as Howard. Big buisness dictates our countries policy always has.

Rudd is right wing yes, but has the backbone of a bowl of junket. he'll bow to whatever is popular or to whomever belts him the most. With a large number of union officials in his potential cabinet and trying to suck up to business at the same time, it could be very interesting if he wins power.

Your kidding me stui, nothing will change just the head of the country.
Howard has won elections going down the popular road too. The same beuraucrats behind the scenes at the moment will still be there when there is a change.
