This fantastically written article stands alone, and does not need any introduction...

Quote:

I've been away from Australia for a while. Every time I come back, the country seems to have edged a little closer towards a corporate utopia – or dystopia, depending on your point of view – and this week is the height of it.

....

APEC was essentially an invention of the Australian Labor Party, in particular of Paul Keating, who wanted to be able to promote neoliberal economic policies in the Asia Pacific region. Like the World Trade Organization and the international financial institutions, APEC was explicitly created to promote neoliberal economic policies at the international level –
the same 'free trade', investor rights and freedom of capital that have decimated peoples all over the world. Unlike the WTO, APEC delivers no treaties or binding declarations, just meetings, discussions and non-binding statements. If the WTO is brazenly transparent with its quasi-legislative and quasi-judicial mechanisms, APEC is insidiously opaque with its back-door, diplomatic route to the same goal.

The APEC group is abhorrent, but it's the ASEAN group that irks me more.

Their support, or maybe I should rephrase that, their ignorance of Burma's Military Junta disgusts me.

Elected in a landslide in 1991, Aung San Suu Kyi has spent the majority of the past 16 years under house arrest.

Forced labour, official corruption rampant and any opposition crushed.

Mon and Karen ethnic minorites, forced to flee into the jungle, their villages torched.

No-one's got the guts to stand up to China and Russia. 2 countries, but not the only ones, that are, in exchange for hardware (mostly military), raping the country of it's natural resources.

Quote:
There is Thailand, still under military rule, heavily censoring the media, the internet, under martial law, repressing dissent; led by “Interim Prime Minister” Surayut Chulanon.

The media was censored more by the previous elected administration.

Martial law was lifted in 41 provinces in January, 7 months ago! 35 other provinces remain under martial law. 31 of these 35 provinces hold the majority of the supporter base of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The other 4 are under martial law for a completely different reason, a Muslim insurgency.

Repressing dissent??? He must have visited a different Thailand to the one I live in...(or maybe his source is a fellow blogger)

"Interim Prime Minister" Surayat Chulanon......I'll reserve my judgement until after the December elections. Smile
