Going to Bangkok in the morning to apply for a retirement visa. Have to visit the Australian Embassy first then halfway across Bangkok to Thai immigration. I have to wear long trousers and shoes for the first time in 7 months. Thai politeness policy when dealing with Thai Government. My girlfriend Boom had to turn in the iron I got 15 months ago for the first time. Just got snipped for a 1000 baht "because need shoe for embassy" .
But I get to spend a night in Bangkok and I will get to stay without jumping on a boat after flying to Indonesia. It is the height or winter and I am sitting in the lounge room in a pair of shorts waiting for the icecream man.

I don't know why you care.

You choose your friends, you can't choose your family. Just because you're related to someone doesn't mean you owe them or they owe you. If she wanted to behave like a prima donna I would have told the daughter "Your aunt isn't coming, that's one less self absorbed twat we have to put up with at your celebration, so don't get bothered about it".

Yeah I know your right. But I just want itto be perfect as possible, not just for my daughter; after his last check up, when we walked out of the door, hubby said "when all this started, I didn't think I'd see my daughter turn 21". He looked so broken. I know hes thinking about walking them down the aisle one day. All his family will be there, and he has done so much for my sister, I don't know where to start. Neither of them are married, so he is their proxy husband when something needs doing. He never says no. She owes it to him. And I won't let her spoil it. Maybe some good will come out of it and she will block me again!

Cheers

My clock radio that I bought last millenium for about $10 has croaked so I bought a new one tonight.

Cost a tad more but it has a digital radio in it and slightly more smarts than the old one.

Plugged it in, time started flashing, went out to grab the instructions, came back and it had set the time and date by itself. Shocked

Setting the alarm, I set it for Monday to Friday, not to go off on the weekend.

Reception and sound quality is something special, like going from a 14 inch CRT with rabbit ears antenna to a 60 inch LED with a real digital aerial.

Noice.

I have Fitbit charge hr. Alarm vibrates the device on your wrist to wake you up, and you can set it for weekdays only too Smile

Nice one Stui.

I use a dumb alarm. On the weekends, when it goes off, I just pull the pillow over my head and go back to sleep. Simple. Through the week, when it goes off, I pull the pillow over my head and back go to sleep. Works perfectly!

German design. Berlin is every bit as good as I remembered from my last trip. Could live here, no problems.

My best mate's house is heated by a geothermal unit with a pipe sunk to 80m depth, believe it or not. That technology should make it to Australia by about 2047.

It must be something about former fascist countries: Both Germany and Japan have awesome design, architecture and engineering traditions.

The Pergamon and Neues museums in Berlin. I know museums aren't everyone's cup of tea, but the mind boggles at these phenomenal collections (and the acts of colonial theft which built them!). Just magnificent piece after magnificent piece.

Whilst there is indignation about colonial theft and grave robbing it has an upside.

The Assyrian treasures trashed by IS IS in Iran this week are irreplaceable
The Buddha statues destroyed by the Taliban was the work of Barbarians.
Today in Thailand there is outrage at the disrespect and vandalism displayed by Chinese tourists towards Thai sacred sites. Breaking off bits of statue and even one twit was caught pissing into a gold pot used for ceremonies.

When I was in Siem Reap a few years back looking at the Angkor Wat and other temples I saw a lot of areas blocked off while western archeologists , mainly from Europe, where painstakingly worked at cleaning and uncovering monuments. Funded by UNESCO and the western governments.

At least where they are now they will be looked after, guarded and enjoyed for generations.

Gave the Bar aq damn good clean up today, got rid of all the junk that had accumulated on and around it and took it back to basics. A bar.

Put a new shelf in on the wall to put the little collection of Boonies and some special edition cans (including 2 unopened cans of Carlton Draught with the picture of the 2010 Premiership team) and reorganised stuff.

Put all the mixers down one end up top so they're easy to find, sorted through the spirits and only left the good stuff in the lockable part (Chivas, Dimple, Booker Noe, etc) , all the rest I loaded up on top to make it functional.

Happy with how it came up. I just need a bottle of Cointreau and another bottle of mixer whiskey.

Stui, your not meant to drink the dregs of EVERY bottle!

Junior is about to leave and I'm home alone until 5am! I've finished cleaning out the ensuite, my wardrobe and the bedroom, gunna have a snack, finish upstairs (ie a quick go over!) dinner, couple of episodes of 24, and rip everything out the laundry cupboard! I love having the house to myself, so quiet! Cheers

Yes, say what you like about Allied bombing, it at least created a canvas for German design and engineering. Berlin is a wonderfully cool city, nowadays, and I can actually get emotional about the ability of a people to recover from the nightmare of history through courage, hard work, self-examination and honesty. It is also a very beautiful country, which i hadn't appreciated until i spent some time there 5 years ago.

Agreed--was actually pondering those very points while walking the streets. We had a great time, and I can genuinely say Berlin is one of the coolest and most interesting cities I've been to. The rest of the country is also great, from the forests and Alps to the quaint towns, but for urbanites, Berlin rocks. It's is also great value for money compared to the most expensive world cities, which is a great bonus whilst eating and drinking out!
