I read that article in last weekends Herald Sun I think.
Howard may be a lot of things but he's not completely insane and you'd have to be completely insane to even think about trying to reverse engineer any western culture to make it like that.
Couldn't/wouldn't/shouldn't happen and won't.
The best way to kill off the union movement is by making them irrelevant, which has been increasingly happening. Any recent upward trend in membership is directly attributable to the ACTU media campaign about workchoices. Once that wears off and assuming a Labour government doesn't allow "no ticket-no start" to creep back in by weakening the freedom of association laws then membership will reduce again as people question the wisdom of paying for something they don't need.
