http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/car-bomb-hits-glasgow-airport/2007/07/01/1183228931518.html

But thy caught the bastards:

Quote:
Two suspected terrorists rammed a four-wheel-drive vehicle into Glasgow airport today in an attack police said was linked to a twin car-bomb plot foiled in London.

"I can confirm that we believe the incident at Glasgow airport is linked to the events in London yesterday," the chief constable in the Glasgow area, Willie Rae, told reporters.

"There are clearly similarities and we can confirm that this is being treated as a terrorist incident."

Rae said the vehicle, a green Jeep Cherokee, was driven at speed into the main glass door entrance to the airport terminal and then exploded in flames. Two men were arrested after the attack, one of whom was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The point is that you can´t defend against this shit, you need to deal with the reasons they´re doing it.

Ah... I don´t get it?

a) The bombings (and acts of violence against civillians more generally)

b) Refer to a), and their reasons depend on who ever the hell is responsible for this particular act. My point is merely that they are NOT lunatics acting on a whim.

There are some very real grievances out there. Writing these sorts of incidents off as terrorism committed by loonies, and looking for a solution by increasing security is not the way to go forward IMO.

Firstly it increases oppression, governmental control, and reduces our daily happiness by causing perpetual fear, and secondly someone willing to kill themselves is remarkably hard to stop (just ask the israelis, they´ve been failing to do it for 20 years).

I agree. Saying Bin Laden and co are "crazy" is rather misguided, to say the least. They have got reasons, and objectives.

Unfortunately, while I agree that the reasons must be looked at, I think we already know the reasons that terrorist acts occur:

resentment against Western countries for their affluence and power, combined with their moral 'decadence' (from an Islamic point of view). America's involvement in the War in Iraq did not create this resentment, but it certainly would have fanned the flames. Of course, they know their history, and there has been a volatile history between the west and the Islamic world going back to the Crusades. America's support of Israel doesn't go down well either.

However, at the same time, we can't just attribute feelings to 'terrorists' and assume that they all feel the same way. The terrorism in Palestine, for example, is a distinctly local issue, the same way that terrorism in Northern Ireland is. The only way to understand those terrorist acts are to understand the histories of those particular countries.

Also, I have no doubt that many terrorists are simply motivated by greed and/or money (which would be the people higher up in the organizations, who don't actually have to use their bodies for their cause)

I think you're wrong. Which came first, September 11, or the war in Iraq? What about the Bali bombings? Even the attacks on Madrid and London may have come after the beginning of the war, but I wonder how much relation those attacks actually had to the war in Iraq.

As Omar said, the reasons are what must be looked at, and rationalisations such as yours are as misguided and pointless as branding terrorists 'lunatics'.

First I think the world needs to resolve the question of: Who are the terrorists?

I Just need some clarification from you David;..are you linking Bin Laden & Co to the 3 recent attacks in London including the title of this thread? If so, could you please provide me with a credible link, cheers.

Who are you referring this to? Is it me? If so, quote me where I said terrorists are "lunatics".

EBB, I was clearly responding to the posts by Frank Stone and Sherrife....

When I say 'Bin Laden and co' I'm talking about Al-Queda and its fellow Islamic terrorist organizations. Did they have anything to do with this incident? I don't know... but whether they did or not is kind of irrelevant, as we're talking in general terms.

Anyway, as I've said before in other threads, Bin Laden may as well be the tooth fairy as far as I'm concerned... he's pretty irrelevant in the scheme of things. The ideology is the problem, not a couple of 'supervillains' in charge.

Perhaps they don't really want to find him
