Beatles perfection lives on

June 02, 2007
ALAN HOWE rates the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album - 40 years old this weekend - and solves a mystery.
SGT Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is hardly flawless, but 40 years on it may still be the best album of the rock era.
With its breadth of vision, the songs the Beatles wrote for it, and the bold evidence that for once a band was in complete artistic control -- just look at the cover, the printed lyrics, the expensive packaging and that unforgettable artwork -- it remains the most influential album ever.
And it might have been even better.
Impatient at the time it was taking to record -- work had begun on it in December 1966 -- EMI asked for a potboiler single.
No other act on earth would have stripped Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever from their coming album to satisfy a record company's greed.
But the Beatles did.

"A day in the life" still would rate as one of the top songs of all time.
But a great album, "she's leaving home" "fixing a hole" "lovely rita" all great Lennon/ McCartney songs along with the haunting Harrison number "within you without you".
I think it shows the strength of the music that new generation fans like myself a cropping up all the time. _________________ WELLLINGHAM ROVES IT....AND KICKS THE GOAL!!!!

Art is art, no matter the inspiration.
This album was the height of the recorded art form in it's day. The fact that it has withstood the test of 40 years changing styles is a credit to the writers, performers and producers.
Might pull it out and give it a spin. |

Is it a new film or a classic? That George is some hero. |

Tess, I have had the misfortune to view said movie.
Don't bother chasing it up, not worth the effort. |

The soundtrack was less than the original.
That's all that mattered really. |

Well, the film really just had other bands (mainly Bee Gees) covering Beatles songs, right? I'm not a massive Beatles fan, but even I can see it wouldn't be as good as the real thing.
It's interesting you bring this up though Tess, as I'd read about this film in books about bad movies. It seemed to be as regular a feature as Plan 9 and Robot Monster... maybe it really is so bad it's worth watching!
As for the album, I've heard it a few times. It has its highlights, but I reckon it's a teeny weeny bit overrated. Most critically acclaimed things are, of course. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Who is Alan Howe ? Can he read ? Did he research this article ? Puhleease
Brian Epstein approached the Beatles for a single in December 1966 as nothing had been released since the album Revolver and the single Yellow Submarine b/w Eleanor Rigby were released in August 1966. Apparently this Howe fellow is not aware that The Beatles did not lift singles off albums - they themselves considered this cheating. This sort of "journalism" makes my blood boil - get it right you idiot !!!!
Hardly flawless ? Funny how he says this and then has nothing to back this ludicrous statement up. I actually listened to the album on 1st June (it's real anniversary) for the first time in a good while and yep, it's flawless. It's one of the most complete albums ever and is one of only a very small handful of genuine masterpieces written in pop music's brief history. Only Led Zeppelin's fourth record and Jethro Tull's "Thick As A Brick" can hold even a small candle to Sgt Peppers IMVHO. Mind you, is there a more influential album than Peppers ? Well, probably not. _________________ skating away on the thin ice of the new day |
