Hicks touches down in Australia
May 20, 2007

AFTER five years in Guantanamo Bay, David Hicks has touched down at an Adelaide air base, and will be transferred shortly to a South Australia jail to serve the rest of his nine-month sentence.

The confessed supporter of terrorists boarded a government-chartered Gulfstream G550 jet at the American base yesterday amid heavy security, sources said.

Sky News reported that the chartered plane landed at the Edinburgh RAAF base, in South Australia, at 9.50am (Adelaide time).

Also on board the plane were Hicks' lawyer, David McLeod, Australian Federal Police officers, Correctional Services officers and officials from the Attorney-General's department.

The plane flew back to Australia via a long route becaue the US would not allow the Guantanamo Bay detainee Hicks to fly into its airspace.

Hicks will now be transferred to the Yatala Labour Prison to complete his sentence for providing material support for terrorism.

He received seven years with all but nine months suspended. He is expected to be released on 30 December.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the cost of flying Hicks back to Adelaide was likely to be similar to the cost of transporting fellow suspect Mamdouh Habib back to Australia from Guantanamo Bay in 2005.

Flying Mr Habib back to Sydney on a charter flight cost taxpayers about $250,000.

I knew they should have used Virgin Blue...

Seriously, $250,000? Why's it cost so much?

As for Hicks, I'm not exactly sure whether it's a good thing or not he's serving his time in Australia... all I know is come December he isn't exactly going to be sprinting back to a terrorist cell to make plans to bomb Melbourne.

Don't complain about a small $250,000 when, from tonight, we are to be bombarded with $50million in our dollars telling us all about Workchoices.
Is there an election in the air?

The charter fee for bringing Hicks home was about $500,000.

Good to see what your tax dollars are being spent on.

I was under the impression Workchoices is no more, it's got a new name.

The jet they flew him home in is supposedly terrorist proof (unless they are on the inside Wink ), and is fitted out with leather furniture and first-classeque fittings.

CONVICTED terror supporter David Hicks has returned home today on a private jet, costing taxpayers more than $500,000.

Hicks flew in luxury, without shackles, in a leather-seated plane.

The Gulfstream G550 is a luxurious long range corporate jet capable of flying 12,500km at an altitude of 15,500m.

The jet has a hi-tech defence system to protect against terror attacks.

What about the sign that said that a particular business would rather deal with terrorists than Americans.

The business: A Funeral Parlour.

Should send him a photo of the proposed new WTC.

I'm not complaining... if taxpayers are being cost $250,000 that means we're losing less than 5 cents each. I think we'll live.

I just find it incredible that a plane trip could cost so much.

I love the way he's referred to universally as a convicted terrorist (or supporter of terrorism), without any mention of the complete farce of a tribunal that 'convicted' him.
