Quote:
Our planet's climate is anything but simple. All kinds of factors influence it, from massive events on the Sun to the growth of microscopic creatures in the oceans, and there are subtle interactions between many of these factors.

Yet despite all the complexities, a firm and ever-growing body of evidence points to a clear picture: the world is warming, this warming is due to human activity increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and if emissions continue unabated the warming will too, with increasingly serious consequences.

.....With so much at stake, it is right that climate science is subjected to the most intense scrutiny. What does not help is for the real issues to be muddied by discredited arguments or wild theories.

So for those who are not sure what to believe, here is our round-up of the 26 most common climate myths and misconceptions.

• Human CO2 emissions are too tiny to matter
• The 'hockey stick' graph has been proven wrong
• Chaotic systems are not predictable
• We can't trust computer models of climate
• It's been far warmer in the past, what's the big deal?
• Global warming is down to the Sun, not humans
• It’s all down to cosmic rays
• CO2 isn't the most important greenhouse gas
• Antarctica is getting cooler, not warmer, disproving global warming
• It was warmer during the Medieval period, with vineyards in England
• Warming will cause an ice age in Europe
• Mars and Pluto are warming too
• Many leading scientists question climate change
• It's all a conspiracy
• Hurricane Katrina was caused by global warming
• Higher CO2 levels will boost plant growth and food production
• Polar bear numbers are increasing

Check this out for a good summary (Dave especially). It's by New Scientist, a magazine produced by the same people who do Time and The Economist... hardly raving left-wing propaganda rags.

Can you think of a specific example?

Thanks Omar, I'll have to check it out in depth at some point.

Personally, I came to the conclusion a while ago that, until I can find out all the information on the issue (which this article should help me to do, hopefully), I'll just assume that the majority of scientists are right, and global warming is a real problem.

Perhaps not the best attitude to take, but it's better than being ignorant, and taking a minority view, in my opinion.

So taking a minority view is being ignorant, interesting concept Davey. What was it, 450 years ago the Jews believed the world was round and the majority thought it was flat.......so were the Jews ignorant?

Thought Eratosthenes first postulated the round earth idea, defore JC was born. Was a reasonably well acceptede theory is scientific circles at least by the time of JC too.

The Jews have believed the world was round since the book of Job was written. That same book is also widely believed to be the oldest book ever written.

Sorry Nuxta, that wasn't what I meant.
What I was trying to say was, if one is going to be ignorant, it is more logical to take the majority view than the minority view.

As I declare myself officially ignorant about global warming, it makes far more sense to take the more generally accepted view.

To say that minority views are ignorant would be a very ignorant thing to say indeed Wink
