Anthony Callea gay and proud
Cameron Adams
March 27, 2007
EXCLUSIVE: POP singer Anthony Callea has ended years of speculation by confirming he is gay.
The Australian Idol star told the Herald Sun he had reached a point in his life where he was comfortable enough to reveal his sexuality.
"Yes, I am gay," Callea said yesterday.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tell us below, what are your views on Anthony Callea saying that it's no 'big issue' that he has revealed he is gay?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I have no issue with my sexuality now, but it's taken time to become confident with who I am and happy with who I am.
"I'm looking forward to living a life with no barriers and not having to worry about saying the right thing."
Callea, 24, said he was planning to come out before a Sydney radio announcer accidentally did it for him this month.
"I'm comfortable enough to come clean now. It's a weight off my shoulders," he said.
He also suspected many of his fans wouldn't be too surprised.
"I don't think it's a big issue. Who cares? If people have an issue with it, it's their issue.
"It shouldn't really be relevant to me being a singer and a performer."
Callea said he regretted denying he was gay during an interview in 2004 in the early days of his Idol experience.
He feared being outed may have harmed his chances in the contest.
"You learn from your mistakes. I was 21, 22 at the time," he said.
"I didn't want to be known as just the gay contestant from Idol.
"It was a very confusing time."
Callea says no one in the Idol camp, his record company Sony BMG or his management insisted he hide his sexuality.
But he said growing up as a gay Italian teenager was difficult

Good on him, however, why do people make such a big deal when someone comes out and says they are gay? It's just the same if a woman loves a man vice versa. Let him have his privacy. _________________ Insert useless signature here -----> |

Who's Anthony Callea?
I'm torn between two responses: good on him, or I really couldn't care less.
I guess it is a bit of a shame that he felt the need to hide his sexuality, but Australian Idol's a dumb show anyway.

growing up as a straight Anglo teenager wasn't all that easy either _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I was almost drummed out of Nicks because of my situation, I had Private Message after Private Message attacking me calling me a pervert who should not be around the kiddies that Nicks attracts. I've dropped my profile at the Club because of these attacks. But you know who you are and I know your reading this, be afraid be very afraid..... In 2007, The Bitch is BACK!
Edited for the droopy one. |
He was advised to hide it by Australian Idol because they told him he would lose the teenybopper girl vote.
So, he didn't come out for a reason.
Now, having said that......what's all the fuss with coming out anyway. It's not like heterosexuals come out and say ...........
I'M STRAIGHT AND PROUD
I really don't understand what anyone's sexuality has to do with anything.
And yes, I did post the 'oops' thread but i still believe they don't have to 'come out' _________________ Jacqui © Proud Pies 2003 and beyond |

You saying that sexuality means nothing is just like a white anglo man saying "what's the big deal with racism and sexism, they're hardly important issues!"
You don't suffer the oppression of being gay in our society so you don't understand (nor do i really for that matter).
I don't care about him at all, but if it encourages more dialogue and more openness then it will only be a good thing for society. _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. When I rise it will be with the ranks... - Eugene Debs |
