Goldsack in the magoos. Interesting. He's a year older than most of the other 2006 draftees yet they get a spin in the willi 1's and he starts in the magoos.

Anyone got any insight? Poor training form? restricted preseason?

Will Nathan Brown step up given his brother's pretty good debut for the Eagles tonight????

Quote:
Played N.Ballarat (Kangas linked).
Willy won by 5 or more.

First things first - Bryan and how his game measures up.
Physical Type - he reminded me (he's shaved his noggin) of a mix or Justin Mellon and Leroy Brown only a bit taller, but the type is similar , strong legs and trunk, powerful arms . Likes the bash and crash .Got his share of hit outs and took a few grabs. Opposed to Cartledge (they also had 10 Roos listed players). He is a raking kick .
Prognosis - give him a crack , at least he will let the opposition know he's around.

Cox - interesting player. Growing in stature and confidence. Can mark , runs on and runs past for the H/B . Kicking is sound . Keep developing him.

Davies - I was unimpressed

Cook - OK without standing out. Has all the tools and if he had any nous he'd be grabbing the Back pocket chance , but it all looks a bit of a purposeless drift . Can really jump and has good grab potential , is reasonably mobile and gives it a roost. Despite all that, he just goes. EG Picken is smaller , about the same speed but for mine was bog. or very close thereto.Picken knows no fear.

Dick - really impressed. fast enough to beat a relay of 4 x 100 or our regular midfield easily. Kicked several goals . First he hit the post , scooting along the seaside boundary at the Pt Melbourne end using his left foot(hit the inside of the far goal post , so it was on it's way thru), Next sprinting in on the same line he blasted a low rt foot check-side like a Tait inswinger straight thru. Two qrters later he kicked on rt footed over his shoulder out of HFF. I've no idea which is his natural foot , he uses either without hesitation. Great hands. Runs and Carries. The "but' is that he is very slim.

Wellingtonboots - similar to Dick but whereas dick is very slim, Welly is seemingly stronger, but perhaps just a little slower . He played upfield whereas Dick was HFF or FP. Moved really well , but wisely the coaches rotated them as the game was quite physical at times. The question you might ask is whether there is room for both as they are so similar.

Toovey - unobtrusive worker type on baller. The type you keep looking at the record again as there is nothing outstanding or distinguishing about his style (a left footed Brady Rawlings ??)

Clarke - Physical Type- Jarrod Crouch. Very quick and low to the grass. Smart and a picture of action. Offloads rapidly to immediate advantage. Left footed . Uses handball constantly and runs back past . Made beautiful position repeatedly but his work often went unseen. Can really run . Low centre of gravity. Only reservations are his experience in the one on one stuff ..but the coaches would surely have worked and worked on this. Saw Gavan Brown and spoke to him about Clarke and he was very enthusiastic too.
Let me postulate this question - we have 1 spot for an LTI upgrade , our prime need relevant to resources
avaiable ,IMHO , is to get Heater into the midfield (and this kid may well be a BP option), anyone else agree that this is a punt worth taking ?

Nicholls - Good without getting leather poisoning . Use is very precise and pinpoint. Kicked some nice goals

Iles - disappointed me. Seemed to be HBF rotating through the middle ,but you just expect a bit more in Yr 2 . Then again he's only 19 and it was a praccie match. Did'nt look particularly quick, strong, desperate, skillful or willing to take them on (say in the manner Brissies Taswegian Sherman does routinely). Lift Sammy !!

The future Book ends Reid and Brown.
At 3/4 time I would have said Dawes got as much of the pill as any of them , and he was only spectating.
To be fair Reid was opposed to Casey Chambers who has had years with a top Club and Brown I think had Aaron Edwards.
Brown is around the same build as Tex and (not wishing to mozz the kid) had difficulty in the FB spot. Eventually he was rested and in Qtr 4 came back onto the Wing or HBF where he did become involved in quite a few passages of play and moved well.

Reid (Reminiscent of a young Josh physically, but lighter and quicker)dropped a succession of direct passes and was muscled out often. He will need several seasons of development. He looked very mobile , but stuffed up a few passes when he did get his hands on it.

(Dawes was there to watch. One significant unit.Heavier than either Reid or Brown. Looks like Greg Phillips might have at 1Cool

And this from Foxy

Quote:
willi got up by around 40 over north ballarat. first quarter was competitive but willi dominated after quarter time, getting out to a 10-ish goal lead at one stage. not been to a willi game for a while...in previous years it was the willi-listed players who seemed to determine most results. today the pies contingent dominated IMO. a v.good sign.

it was the cox & nicholls show for mine.

nicholls - mighty impressive through Q2 & Q3. has pace & can actually kick the ball cleanly on the run. not sure how inside he is though. very classy kick.

cox - goodness me. hopefully it's not just a case of an athletic kid dominating at a lower level...because this guy plays like clement with x-factor. dominated most 1-on-1's...cool in congestion...seriously safe pair of hands...beautiful kick. also reads the play v.well. a complete natural across half-back.

brown - played FB for most of the first 3 quarters. kept his man quiet...but had little chance to show off his own tricks. moved up the ground slightly as the game went on, and took every marking chance he got. hands seem v.clean at least...hard to tell much else.

reid - played CHF for the entire game pretty much. unlike brown, spilled a couple of easy ones & seemed to take the harder marks (e.g. a slips-catch type mark in the goal square after he worked his man out of the contest). probably the best thing was that the spilled marks gave him a chance to show off his 2nd-effort agility. certainly no spud at ground level. set up a couple of goals & kicked 1 or 2 himself.

dick - given plenty of time in the midfield & also around the forward pocket. more impressive in the forward line for mine. absolute livewire in forward-line congestion. kicked a couple of ripping goals on the run in the first half.

toovey - serviceable. has height & his kicking is decent...if he was as athletic as cox i'd be excited.

davies - v.quiet.

iles - not super-prominent. think his marking is good but still a big ? over his kicking, especially on the run.

bryan - in the best. his taps weren't amazing but gave a great contest on the deck & around the ground, including a towering mark in defence in Q1. should be pushing for selection.

cook - hard to say. his goal-kicking was certainly off, but he does get handy touches around half-forward, and he has good instinct in congestion.

m.clarke - played half-back most of the day. not a standout as such, but certainly did nothing wrong. would say what he needs to work on for the minute is getting to & influencing more aerial contests. but his kicking & pace are fine & he's only gonna get better.

wellingham - not a standout.

fairly sure i've forgotten someone. in any case, best thing IMO was that you could actually see potential in nearly all our youngsters today...not just 1 or 2. good weekend all up.

Great win and all Collingwood players were stand outs for mine. Cooky could do with some goal kicking practice, but saying that I still remember the 5 he slammed home against Werribee last year to secure the win in a tight match. It was also the day Pendlebury tore the midfield apart.

Some pics from today.

Already 12 Pies listed players in the seniors. Does the restriction on numbers apply for pracy matches?

The 12/10 rule only comes into effect when an AFL aligned team plays a non AFL aligned team (Port Melbourne and Frankston).

It wouldn't have mattered yesterday as North Ballarat are aligned with the Kanga's.
