Garrett to head IR protest concert
March 26, 2007

LABOR MP Peter Garrett will head a Rockin' For Rights concert following a protest march against the federal Government's industrial relations laws in Sydney next month.

Aussie bands including Youth Group, The Screaming Jets, Something for Kate, You Am I and the Hoodoo Gurus will perform at the event staged by Unions NSW.

The protest rally from Hyde Park to the Sydney Cricket Ground will be held on April 22.

"Never before has there been a more critical time to get out and rock for our rights," said Garrett, the shadow minister for climate change, environment, heritage and arts.

Garrett, the former lead singer of Midnight Oil, will MC the concert.

"This incredible line-up of Australia's best will bring punters from far and wide whose future work experience is up for grabs under the Howard government's Work Choices legislation," he said.

"I reckon this will be a mighty event."

It's great that concerts can achieve so much! Look at the way Live 8 changed the world.

Oh, wait, no it didn't.

There's less chance of this making an impact than there is of Bono getting rid of his stupid sunglasses.

Is Bono still trying to make poverty history?

As For Garret, what does he do on "crop a cop" day?

The event is called 'Rockin' For Rights' and features a fantasic line-up of Australian bands who are standing with workers to overturn John Howard's unfair workplace laws- http://www.rockinforrights.com.au/

The timing of the event is also strategic being the weekend prior to the ALP national conference, at which the ALP industrial relations policy will be formally endorsed. (Yes, there needs to be pressure on the ALP to ensure the IR policy is right).

WorkChoices will be one of the main issues at the Federal Election this year. It was a factor in the ALP being returned in the recent NSW State Election, and hopefully will be part of the reason John Howard loses the election this year.

Add to that list the Iraq war, climate change, David Hicks, poor investment in infrastructure, and lies about interest rates (which will go up maybe 1-2 times before the next election).

Well, at least, when we have ousted this evil, corrupt Liberal government, we can finally relax in the knowledge that the new Labor government will be honest and scrupulous in all its dealings, and run the country flawlessly Wink

So your attitude is that yes, the Libs are have involved us in a useless war, have severely underrepresented the rights of an Australian in an illegal overseas prison system, are either scaremongers or outright liars in regards to interest rates, hopelessly slow to react to the environmental crisis, have not invested enough of the surplus' we've been enjoying in long term growth and development, have ruined the working situations for thousands of Australians, but any alternative will only be worse?

Fear of change, that's the way to a brighter future Rolling Eyes

That's taking it a bit far, isn't it?

I was only being a smartarse, anyway. It irks me when people talk about Rudd as if he was the saviour. If he becomes prime minister, I bet in a few years time he will have already racked up a few controversies, backflips and major errors in judgement, just like Howard. Of course, that's not a reason not to vote for him, it's just an acceptance of how politics works.

Yea but having said all that Dave, you're going to be voting liberal right?

At this point I expect so, but the above comments would have little if anything to do with my decision.

Although a lot could happen between now and election day, I am fairly committed to voting for the Liberals, basically because I think they are more capable of running the country than Labor.

Of course, in the next six months, Howard could do something incredibly stupid that would make me change my mind, or Labor could produce a policy platform which was a really good idea, or something. You never know.
