Closure adds to maternal worries
Nikki Protyniak
March 20, 2007

RYE mum-to-be Naomi Porter is very nervous about giving birth in a few weeks.

But it's not the thought of labour that has this first-time mum worried. It's the 45-minute drive she now faces to get to hospital.

Ms Porter, 34, was booked in to have her baby at Rosebud Hospital -- an easy six-minute drive from home -- but the closure of its birthing unit next month means she must get to Frankston Hospital instead.

"I find it upsetting and sad, the situation we're in," said Ms Porter, who is due in late May.

"I'm not usually a stand-up-and-shout person but I think the closure is wrong. I had the opportunity to have my baby in my local environment and now that's been taken away.

"It is a long way to go."

She said the unexpected shift was also unfair for her partner, who faces driving at least 90 minutes each day to visit them in hospital.

Ms Porter scoffed at bureaucratic claims last week that the birthing unit was only being "relocated", not closed.

"From the point of view of someone giving birth, it's closing.

"I don't know how they can say anything different," she said.

Peninsula Health spokeswoman Shamala Jones said that after giving birth women could be transferred via ambulance to Rosebud for the duration of their hospital stay.

Absolute disgrace. magpiesgurl, Rosebud hospital services a hell alot of people.

It takes half an hour to drive to Frankston from Rosebud, but further past Rosebud it takes longer. Imagine coming from Sorrento or Portsea, you're looking at close to an hour, and during summer, over two hours from Sorrento, Porstea, Rye etc to Frankston.

It just aint that simple magpiegurl. That is why it is such a big deal.

I relise that the Rosebud Hospitial services alot of people, but they would be alot better assisted in a better equiped hospital such as Frankston. One of the main problems with Rosebud is if a woman who is due to give birth presents there with any sort of complication, she is automatically sent down to Frankston.I know this for a fact as my previous step sister had this happen to her twice.

I'm well aware of the times it takes to travel to and from Frankston along the Mornington Peninsula but when it comes to the health and all round well being of mothers and their new borns, doesn't it make alot more sense that all involved are treated in the best possible facilitys available at the time?

It's not like Frankston Hospital wouldn't be short of experience when it comes to pregnancies!

The question is; How many of them are planned?

The decision to close such units is most often related to the reluctance of obs and gynae docs and anaesthetists to travel - without them you can't have such a unit - it aint always the choice of administrators (same at Williamstown Hospital recently)

Patient safety at the xpense of further travel time has to be the priority

It's not like having a baby is an emergency situation.

They've had 9 months to prepare for it!

That is the case. That is exactly what happened, and yes, there isn't much that can be done. But, it's pretty pathetic that it has gone this far.

Suppose the mothers will just have to spend $20 out of their baby bonus for a taxi.

Surely out of all the high paid professions Doctors are the least worthy of our criticism?

Lawyers - nothing needs to be said here (in most cases)

Upper Management - Corrupt capitalist pricks

Fulltime Investors - as above
