Amazing stuff. He always said he wanted to captain Australia in the World Cup in 2003. Be interesting to see whether he fights his way back and achieves this.
It was a surprise.

because of steve waugh being dropped from the 1day squad,i honestly think if he isnt in the squad for the 2003 world cup,i think thats going to be the difference from winning it to losing it unfortunately, who agrees there from what i said??,who in their right mind would drop a player of his calabor, who ever made this decision should be bloody shot or something like that, all im hoping for is that steve waugh gets back into that side and retain the 2003 world cup for us,good luck steve waugh..

Steve waugh has been everything to Australian cricket for a long time. He has been a rock and deserves all the praise he that can be lavished on him.
It is going to be time for a change soon and the selectors have started the transition process. Steve and Mark are still capable but are getting on a bit. In our last "era" when the senior players like Lillee, Chappel, Marsh etc retired we were in the doldrums for a long time. More recently, the Boarder and taylor dynasties were transcended relatively smoothly because the selectors did not wiat until the last moment to make the moves.
I have all the respect in the world for Steve Waugh but time waits for no man as they say. He will have a couple of years left in test cricked and then his replacement will have the respect of the players and confidence to do the job.

Think back to Mark Taylor getting the sack as one-day captain. He was dropped in 1997 and the aussies went on to win the world cup in 1999. This has got to do with team balance and timing. If steve is hungry enough and the team gets complacent or someone is in bad form, he'll make it back. But if the team gels without him, they'll have a better chance of winning the world cup with another allrounder (such as shane watson - no not the ex-magpie). Any number of senior players could captain aus and win. Steve rarely bowls anymore, his batting has been bad this season. Bring on the youth - lehmann (he's only 32, steve's 37 this year), watson, katich, even hayden and langer in the one-day team.
