I spose its up to taste Tess (taste test...oops I'll put my teeth back in!)

Maybe categories in all genre or styles may be better. Ala Jazz, Blues, Punk, Classical, Ska/ Reggae etc.

Soul/ Blues: Aretha Franklin....hands down

Punk/ New Wave: Deborah Harry

Folk: Judith Durham, Mamma Cass

Jazz: Billy Halliday,

Rock/ Pop: Gwen Stefani

Ska/ Reggae: Yes, Gwen Stefani (her original Selecter covers a classic)

Country and Classical: Linda Rondstadt (for those who argue classical. Check out her work with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra)

Good topic Tess. Sure Ive forgotten heaps. Do one for the blokes next.

Kylie Vs Madonna?

Judith Durham Vs Aretha?

Babara Striesand Vs Deborah Harry?

Durham and Franklin was a tough one, both are very good in both their own genres, but I've always been a huge fan of Aretha Franklin. Never been a fan of Madonna so that one made it easier to pick.

Like wise the last one.

But I like your list there, skaman.

Any room for Karen Carpenter anywhere in this list? She was talented but I am not sure if she scrapes in.

Not that I am particularly interested in any of the poll options , but if someone like Madonna is going to be included , you should probably change it from greatest singers to pop icons or something of that note.
Madonna wouldn't be one of the top female pop singing talents today let alone all-time.

Pat Benetar has to rate a mention and for that matter Celine Dion has got a magnificent voice as well. One of my favourites was Terri Nunn from Berlin. A great little voice and easy on the eye.

Not that I dislike all of Madonnas songs, but I vote Benator/ Nunn(spot on Nuxta) against her. Also Patsy ans Dusty by a country(boom tish*) mile. Good choices. Have it all over Dolly.

I kinda picture you HAL, being a kinky German electronica band Kraftwork fan. Your favorite song being "let me be you pocket calculator".

True dinks...look it up. Shocked Wink
