Tragedy of David Hicks

At this time of year one's mind turns to things metaphysical - that and a lot of drinking and eating of course.

I have been surprised by how many ordinary Aussies seem to care for what happens to David but the Federal Government do not.

At the risk of being political I propose that WE UNLEASH the power of Nicks to bring down a hailstorm of protest re this travesty of justice.

Young David just wrong time wrong place but what has he done wrong?

Post here your suggestions how we can help David.

There is a time and a place for political soap boxes.

For David Hicks ANY time and ANY place is appropriate.

Whether or not David has done anything wrong is not the point, the point is he has a basic human right to a trial.

Who are the real terrorists? David is not being held by extremist Islamic militia, he has been kidnapped by the United States government! With the full consent of the Australian Foreign Office.

Our Government has the power to extradite one it's nationals but chooses not to and hence is a party to this human rights violation. What these governments are doing is criminal and something needs to be done about it.

locking up a guy for 5 years without a trial, most of it in solitary confinment, in a box where the lights are left on 24 hours is horrible torture and the fact that our government has stood by and watched sickens me as an Australian. I am about the same age as David and when I imagine what I have got out of life these last five years, living as a free citizen in a supposedly free country, starting a career, trying to start a family, surrounded by friends and family and loved ones, the image of that poor man locked in a box without even the possibility or a fair trail is enough to bring tears to my eyes. Imagine if the last five years of your life where taken away from you without a day in court, by some overseas government of a country your nover even been too! or the next five years, not seeing family, not seeing anyone, going slowly insane. If he commited a crime under Afgan, International or Australian law then give the poor bastard a trial! Otherwise send him home.

No sympathies here. If any of the roles had been reversed and he was an Aussie, Brit or Yank and been captured by Iraq, all this talk would be irrelivant. He would be dead. Full stop. No trial, no sympathy, nothing. He chose to train and bed with the enemy, he IS an enemy. If he shot and killed one of our soldiers fighting in Iraq, where would you stand. He maybe is not been treated like some of us would like, however, being an ex soldier, he would be only too aware of any consequences due to actions upon his part. Give him a fair trial ...yes, but he should think himself lucky he's not stoned to death or beheaded.
