In 2006 Ryan improved on all of his career high stats excluding goals. This achievement shows a marked improvement in his output. Mick Malthouse has seen Ryan as a key part of the defense line up with and ability to provide run off half back. In 2006 Ryan was given many tough jobs, most of which he succeeded. The one that sticks out in my mind would be round 12 when he was given the assignment of containing Swan gun duel brownlow medalist Adam Goodes. Ryan lined up side by side in the middle of the ground and gave Goodes an absolute toweling, not just holding Goodes to just 3 first qtr possessions but also running off him kicking two of his trademark long goals, and also setting up two other attempts on goal. Ryans season and career high possession match was against Hawthorn in round 2, he amassed 28 disps (16 kicks 12 hballs), 4 marks, 6 tackles and a goal. The big flaw in Ryans game is that he is too easily dragged to the full-back. This was evident in the Elimination final where he was dominated by Monty. Playing all 23 games in 2006 he is fast becoming an integral part of Magpies team. 2006 was the year that Malthouse taught Ryan a defensive attitude and which further benefit his claim to becoming a midfielder.

Ryans greatest weapon is most definitely his long left foot kicking., accurate goal kicking and his speed. When he applies himself he is a very tough player to match up on.

Season Highlights

26 disps (14 kicks 12 hballs), 9 marks and a goal in Round 21 44-point win over Carlton at the MCG (27 Aug 2006)

20 disps (11 kicks 9 hballs), 8 marks and a goal in Round 18 4-point loss to Adelaide at Football Park (5 Aug 2006)

23 disps (17 kicks 6 hballs), 10 marks and 2 goals in Round 12 13-point win over Sydney at Stadium Australia (24 Jun 2006)

20 disps (15 kicks 5 hballs), 8 marks and a goal in Round 10 26-point win over Brisbane at the MCG (3 Jun 2006)

23 disps (18 kicks 5 hballs) and 8 marks in Round 8 102-point win over Geelong at the MCG (20 May 2006)

28 disps (16 kicks 12 hballs), 4 marks, 6 tackles and a goal in Round 2 35-point win over Hawthorn at Docklands Stadium (9 Apr 2006)

23 disps (13 kicks 10 hballs), 5 marks, 5 tackles and a goal in Round 1 34-point loss to Adelaide at Docklands Stadium (3 Apr 2006)

2007 will see him attempt to gain that elusive midfield spot which he is so dearly after.

Lonie, who is harder on himself than most, still sees plenty of room for improvement, after his final two efforts of the afternoon only registered points, where on another day he might have ended with a bag of four goals

Ryan Lonie readily concedes that had he not addressed several issues at the end of 2005, he may not have been at Collingwood this year.

A bout of OP is keeping ryan out at the moment, he will return more than likely after the anzac day clash. As we all know OP is a nasty injury so i wish him all the best and hopefully he can get abck to those long racking goals in the near future.

When did they say that he had OP?? Must have missed it!! When we were talking to club officials on Saturday before the Wet Toast game, they said he was still a little sore from the Sinclair hit.

Interesting!!

Had his first run for 9 weeks at Willy, by all reports got through alright. Will be better for the run and must find some form at Willy next week to get a call up against the Swans.

Round 14.

We moved him up from the backline to the wing this week and had him running around a little bit more. We had him on Troy Makepeace, whos a quality player and former North Melbourne player, and until he went off with an ankle injury, which thankfully doesnt seem to be serious, he was going pretty well. He had 19 possessions, used the ball well, and got a bit of that grunt run back that we know hes capable of.

Lones was solid again on a wing. I sort of eased him through the second half, because the ground was pretty heavy, and I was conscious if Mick was going to pick him for this week, I wanted to make sure he had some legs, so thats why his possession rate dropped off in the second half. He finished with 23 possesions after having 18 in the first half.

Good to see Lonie is still at the club, and congratulations to him for the new son, dressed in black and white I hope.
