Award presenter exposes himself

TELEVISION personality Axle Whitehead has been rebuked by Network Ten after exposing his penis at the Australian Recording Industry (ARIA) Awards.

The incident was not telecast on Network Ten, and it was unclear how many of the 10,000 people, including young music fans, who were at the Acer Arena in Sydney last night saw it.

Whitehead, who has hosted Ten's Video Hits for two years, was on-stage presenting an award to hip-hop outfit Hilltop Hoods with radio jock Jabba, when he exposed himself.

He also simulated masturbation on the ARIA trophy as the winners made their way to the stage.

"I was shocked that he did it," said one guest who attended the event and saw the incident.

"It's just lucky that it wasn't shown live on television."

While the 2003 Australian Idol finalist couldn't be contacted today for comment, a Ten spokeswoman said the stunt was unacceptable.

"In an incident that was not telecast, last night Axle momentarily exposed himself at the ARIAs," she said.

"His behaviour was inappropriate and Ten and ARIA producers, Roving Enterprises, do not condone it.

"We are addressing this issue with Axle and will make no further comment at this stage."

ARIA event producer Mark Pope agreed.

"I wasn't in the actual room at the time of the alleged incident," he said.

"However this type of behaviour isn't something that ARIA finds acceptable or condones."

The 25-year-old Victorian's former Video Hits co-host Kelly Cavuoto was dropped from the program following a drunken outburst at the 2004 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.

ARIA flashing TV presenter quits

TELEVISION personality Axle Whitehead has resigned from the Ten Network three days after exposing himself at the Australian Recording Industry (ARIA) Awards.

Taking effect immediately, Whitehead will no longer host Ten's music program Video Hits.

The 25-year-old was rebuked by Ten after showing his penis at the awards, and also simulated masturbation on the ARIA trophy while presenting an award to hip-hop outfit, Hilltop Hoods.

"I can't take back what I did, but I can take responsibility for it," Whitehead said today.

"I have had a great time with Ten; it's been the opportunity of a lifetime, and I know I can put all the experience of the past three years to positive use going forward.

"I'm now going to take a short break from television to focus on my music. Thanks, and I hope to see you all again soon."

A new host for Video Hits will be announced in due course.

Ten's chief programming officer David Mott said he was disappointed with Whitehead's actions at the event.

"We very much regret the incident and any embarrassment it has caused to ARIA and music fans," Mr Mott said.

"Axle is doing the right thing in taking responsibility for his actions."

The incident was not telecast on Ten, and it was unclear how many of the 10,000 people, including young music fans, who were at the Sydney event saw it.

Ten was forced to edit the indecent act out of the ARIA telecast, which occurred while Whitehead and radio jock Jabba were presenting awards for highest selling single and album.

The stunt was flashed up on the two video screens either side of the stage.

Ten, ARIA producers and Roving Enterprises were outraged.

"I wasn't in the actual room at the time of the alleged incident," said ARIA event producer Mark Pope.

"However, this type of behaviour isn't something that ARIA finds acceptable or condones."

The Victorian-raised personality first rose to fame in 2003 as a contestant in singing program Australian Idol.

He made the top 12 and shared the stage with the likes of successful performers Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll.

While he was eliminated from the program early, he was offered the role as co-host of Video Hits, with fellow Idol contestant Kelly Cavuoto, in 2004.

Cavuoto was dropped a few months later, following a drunken outburst at the 2004 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.
