Baby makes a big splash
October 21, 2006

A BABY humpback whale frolicking in Port Phillip Bay has stunned researchers surveying marine populations in the area.

The 9m whale, thought to have recently left its mother, has been seen off Mornington.

Monash University PhD student Kate Charlton was surveying dolphins in the bay with research assistant David Donnelly from the Dolphin Research Institute when they saw the leviathan.

"You never get sick of seeing something like that," she said.
She said it was rare to see humpbacks late in the year as they head north to warmer waters.

"It's hard to determine what its movements will be. It may stay in the bay for a few more days or it may go out the heads and keep moving."
She said they had thought the humpback was a killer whale after reports a pod had been seen.

They travelled with the humpback as it made its way from Mt Martha to Mornington, where it torpedoed out of the water.
"Whales breach usually as a social movement when there's other whales, or maybe people, around," she said.

What's wrong with frolicking? I've been known to do some frolicking myself from time to time you know... if there were more frolicking in this world life would be so much better. In fact I'm gonna go frolicking in the local park right now Smile
