You have to love them. 82% jump in profits but they will sack 2500 staff.
I bet you the board members get a nice little bonus. |

that's business. Obviously it's tough on the guys being sacked, but it is in a way a sign that the business is becoming more efficient by employing less staff. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Still, would you prefer that the Coles Group be bought out by foreign investors, or to remain in Australian hands, though at the loss of 2500 jobs?
These guys have struggled to compete with Wooloworths for years, and they are finally getting serious. Bad luck for those that will lose their jobs though. |

Who cares whether they are owned by local or foreign members of the bourgeois? How do we benefit from it? Nation states are an irrelevant relic of an old system, corporations are all that matters these days, and an Australian corporation is just as unlikely to do anything to help Australians as an international corporation. Notice how Shell and Caltex sponsor a lot of shit at schools? Nothing local about those companies.
Dave mate you are incredibly misguided. Efficiency probably shouldn't even be in the top 3 priorities of a happy and healthy society. Autonomous decisionmaking, health, education, opportunity for freedom and creativity, security from coersion and oppression, etc., all of these are more important than cold economic efficiency, and don't ever believe anyone who says pure economic considerations of efficiency and productivity will create those social characteristics listed above.
**EDIT** BTW i fully realise the self-serving and subversive nature of corporate sponsorship of child-age things, but merely use it to show that international corporations do the same sort of things (that may be unfortunately and ignorantly considered positive by some people) that local ones do. _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. I think that's patronising. Do you think I don't comprehend what it would be like to lose your job when you have to support a family? No, I wouldn't want to lose my job any more than you would, or anyone else.
However, it's life. It's business. We all know that corporations have little regard for their employees, but then again, it would be surprising if they did. I may be taking a simplistic view, but I'm right, am I not? Doesn't technical progress/increased efficiency come at the cost of jobs? Of course, the dilemma is whether to think of the employees or think of the increased profits for the company. No surprises what they're going to choose. Whether it's right or not is another matter, but I think you'd be naive to believe that everything in this world is 'right'.
Sherrife we have been studying the concept of social capital recently, and the concept makes a lot of sense. Social Capital is basically taking the happiness of a society into account, which is a viable way of increasing economic efficiency, as opposed to a completely cold economic rationalist view (I don't know all that much on the subject but I think this is right). So in that regard I agree with you, a cold economic view shouldn't be the only one accepted, although I still believe in economic rationalism to some degree.

Pretty good. Just putting the finishing touches on his moustache. How's Timothy Leary going? _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

It has nothing to do with efficency David. It is purely about profiteering by faceless corporations and making shareholders (usually major board members) more money for nothing.
You really think that less staff is going to make a company more efficient? Someone has to pick up the slack that is left over when these staff are laid-off (not with the pat on the back and extra gratutious hand-shake that executives get either), and that someone will typically be someone in middle or front-line management. Less staff, but the workload remains the same. Efficiency my ass. _________________ I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody. |

No, the other way around - as the company becomes more efficient, then it will sack staff. Therefore I'm assuming that they no longer need the number of workers any more. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Unlikely. The likely result will be the other people will probably have to work harder, you might increase their efficiency in certain areas, but their effectiveness probably won't increase. For instance, in my work, if we are missing two people on any given day, then our efficiency certainly increases because we are using our time in a more strict manner, however, our effectiveness doesn't increase.
If there is genuine duplication of the work, then there would be a case for increased efficiency, however if the Coles Myer are relying on others to pick up the slack, then I can't really see efficiency increasing. |
