Me and my whole family used to call him "Almost" - he almost took a mark, he almost kicked a goal, he almost bumped an opponent. The guy had the most amazing physique, but didn't have an aggressive bone in his body. He is probably a nice bloke, but was a great disappointment as a player, as he looked like he could have been anything. |

A bit of a Mark Richardson you may say (for those of us who never saw him)? |

Along those lines, only a lot more so. He really was huge, but was a real gentle giant which used to frustrate a lot of supporters. _________________ Tubeway Army 1979

I used to love picking up my 3XY top 40 from the local record shop...
Big Wes has another claim to fame in that he and his old man Graeme got there names on the front of the grand stand (somewhere near where the sherrin and rush stands meet for memory) although they gave those out pretty easily considering that Gubby Allan got one. _________________ 'Collingwood are the Bradmans of Football'

Might be a top bloke....But he was an ordinary footballer.
It shows how bad we were back then. There is also no way I would have him in the team now _________________ ITS NOT MY FAULT BLOODY JONATHON BROWN COMES FROM WARRNAMBOOL !! |

gubby-yeah, i think his admin work leading up to 1990 may have had something to do with his name going up there. he was an ok player, but not quite a collingwood "great".
i used to religously go through the 3xy top 40, studying which songs had moved up and down. "ooh look, You must be crazys gone up 5 places for ted Mulry gang!" _________________ Tubeway Army 1979

Thought he was exceptionally good for his size.
He rarely panicked under pressure, and from what i recall his disposals always hit the target, a nice steady left footer.
Certainly never guilty of over-possessing the ball, at least he had the football smarts to move the pill off to a more mobile team mate.
And Wes was actually what you might call a pioneer of the interchange rotation policy. In the 80s, Leigh Matthews frequently removed Wes from the ground not for his performances, but to maximise his endurance during a game. Although his aerobic capacity was not as great as some other talls. Great servent to the club.
And where did Ash go?

Far right corner of the Jack Ryder stand in fact.
Greame has that sign up on his back fence now. _________________ "MAKE COLLINGWOOD GRATE AGAIN" |
