Post subject: Where is Big Wes? | |
|
Wes Fellowes was one of the biggest enigmas to ever play for the pies.
Built like a greek god, kicked the ball like Mark Bayes, but didnt have an aggressive bone in his body.
Won the Copeland Trophy, then was superceded by Charles and Monkey and was never seen again.
Does anyone know what happened to him, or have any comments on Wezza?

I only really remember Wes in his last season when he was rucking for the reserves, i think 87 or 88. A true dinosaur of a ruckman, he barely got off the ground for the centre bounce, and to this day i don't think that i've seen a slower player take to the field. I think his body was completely rooted by the time he'd finished. Even though he was so immobile in those last games i saw of him he was reasonably effective, probably through his sheer size and weight and the fact that he was playing kids.

Don’t know where he is now but his name reminded me of the time i played against Wes. It was a 1984 practice match, QLD v Collingwood, i was a skinny ruckman ( a bit like Wes before he discovered 'weights') playing for QLD and in my first ruck contest against Wes I was so pumped that I was playing against the Pies I just charged in and jumped into him Greg Stafford style ( that type of ruck tactic was not common back then, as it is now). He got very upset and had a go at me, so I let one go to his head which he didn’t seem to feel and then he said “if you do that again I am going to get angry” and jogged off. It was like playing against the Hulk, his arms were bigger than my legs.

God, please don't bring that name up. he has to be my most despised players at the time. He was absolutely useless. talk about father son rule, it smelt like rotten eggs at the time and it still riles me today. What a dud. Probably the worst player to win a Copeland, says something about how bad we were during this period. (100+ loss to Essendon in pelim final, got a mouth full from R andrews that day)

For such a big, wise ass sort of a bloke (who liked the weights *cough), used to drop his head whenever he felt the wind brush his hair.

Do you know Gavin McGuane Weed? He played in that match as well, and was telling me all about it recently. He played the first quarter on Daics.

nice little story Weed. I still wonder to this day how he won the Copeland.
Gee we must have been bad. Nothing against Wes mind you.

Clerk in the tax office at the time I believe. Went from weed to WOW physically overnight which didn't improve his ability to mark overhead in a contest.
Last thing I knew, his Dad had an electrical goods store in the city. haven't been near there for years so don't know if he's still there but I bought a ghetto blaster off his dad in '84.

The guy was better than most realise and way better than anything we have now.
A lovely gentle bloke who played a year at Port Adelaide in 1991 and finished third in their B&F and then he retired.
He is alive and well and doesn't have any great interest in footy these days.

A genuinely nice fella. I know his brother very well & Wes is a top bloke.
As cooldewd said his interest in AFL is very limited these days.
I vividly remember a game at Kardinia Park in 1986 where took about 15 marks & dominated the ruck.
Unfortunately for Wes, Lethal never really gave him a decent go.
Then again Monkey was on his way up.

I suppose he was 'guilty', if that's the right word for it, of not being a superstar. some players cop more abuse than they probably deserve, others less. Wes is in the former category.
At then end of the day, 100+ games and a Copeland is a better career than most, and as TCT pointed out, he was marginalised a bit pretty much after winning the B&F. As someone pointed out, he'd improve our ruck division 100% if he was playing now!
