A FIRE at the MCG this morning that destroyed part of the northern grandstand is suspected to have been triggered by welders working at the rear of the new stand.
As many as 300 people were evacuated from the ground when the fire broke out about 9.50am.
Passing motorists and MCG staff were among the first to notice smoke billowing from the stand, after plastic seating caught fire at 9.50am.
About two dozen seats were destroyed, and up to five window panels and part of the roof were damaged in the brief fire, which was brought under control in less than 20 minutes.
Five fire trucks arrived almost immediately, the first within four minutes, as firefighters raced to protect the Melbourne icon.
“With the rate of spread with plastics, it wouldn’t have taken long for it to get taken hold,” fire commander Lou Mele said at the scene.
“We’ve got some tradesmen doing some hot works at the rear of the northern stand. We think that’s the cause.
“Fortunately, because our response time was so good with five trucks straight away, we’ve brought it quickly under control.
“It could have been a lot worse.
A fire truck remained on scene this morning to monitor for further outbreak. _________________ Kaylene.

Holy crap!!! They are lucky to be able to put that out so quickly, because plastic is so hard to put out and spreads so quickly, not to mention the fumes are really bad! |
