Watching the races on tv yesterday brought to mind a few things.
1.why does it always rain on a big event in melbourne?
2.What has happened to the cattle yards and abbatoirs down the back straight.
When i was a kid we used to ride our pushbikes to flemington and jump the wooden rails into the sheep pens and pinch their ear tags,we had bags of the stinking things.
Dont know why,but we just didit.
All around newmarket, and flemington were these massive cattle and sheep pens .
From what i could see,the whole area seems to be elite housing now,at least it looked that way as the horses went past that area.
3.The cup
I last attended the cup when i backed igloo and it ran 2nd,i cant remember who won.
it was about 100 deg,i wore a purple suit and yellow shirt.pink tie.
i remember that because it was my work outfit,i was a teller athe SSB at the time.
We settled in at a bar at the bottom of the home straight.
when we went for a bet after race 5 went back to the bar and we couldnt get a drink as it was 55 deep at the bar,
there were people everywhere, couldnt scratch yourself.
20 minute queue at the toilets, couldnt get near the tote, couldnt get a drink.
i thought this is silly,so we left, caught the tram to the waterloo hotel and watched the rest of the meeting on the pub telly.
never again.
has it changed much?

Ed, all town houses now. Do not know when it happened, they just appeared about three of four so years ago.

Yes, it still is a mad house. It is not worth the effort of going to the cup (unless you intend to stay in the car park). Have to line up to drink, bet, eat and pee!
