THis is not really The Prototype, there is no Prototype, he's a figment of your imagination.

however, rand corp, if those who believed in the gods didn't believe that their god/s were the only true god/s, what point would their faith have? And if there is a God, is it not possible that it be the one that is worshipped by a certain group, eg Christians? It's a logical possibility.

As an atheist with agnostic tendencies due to my attempt to not be dogmatic, i think there are two real possibilities RE a god of some sort.

A) There is nothing 'out there', and the various cultures and religions are simply symptoms of a deep psychological need for meaning and protection.

B) There is some sort of spiritual 'something', and all the religions and cultures are simply ways for humans to interact with and approximate what is by it's very nature beyond our comprehension.

Basically it boils down to this: they've all got a bit of insight into something much deeper, or they're all nuts/primitive.

I think they're nuts. But obviously we can never be sure.

There's a good quote by someone (Voltaire? I forgot Razz): "If there was no God then it would be necessary to create one."

Sherrife despite my own lack of belief I still envy those who do. Even if there is no God, the fact that they believe there is gives them hope. Their life seems more meaningful. I sometimes wish I had that kind of faith, but I don't.

I was watching one of my favourite movies today, The Seventh Seal (directed by Ingmar Bergman)... among other things, one of its main themes is man's search for God, and the horrible realisation that there may not be anything out there, and that death brings eternal nothingness. Would recommend this film to everybody... warning it's in Swedish though Laughing

Indeed David however, monotheism is merely one form of theism and there are many religions in the world that recognize multiple heavens or universes and multiple gods or deities within their own theologicum.

it's interesting though that monotheism has outlasted most of the polytheistic religions, with Christianity, Islam and Judaism dominating world religion... apart from some of the more minor ones, Hinduism is the only real polytheistic religion that is still popular. Why did I bring this up? I forgot Laughing

I suspect the billions of Hindis, Buddhists and Doaists of the world would be more than a little surprised to hear you claim monotheism is older and more dominant! The Vedic sutras (such as the upanishads) are the oldest religious texts in the world with the Vedic religion believed to be over 9000 years old. The Lord Buddha was said to have been born over 500 years before Christ and no one really knows how old the Tao is.

Atheists are as bad as fanatics. Both claim they know the complete truth of the entire universe.

I am humble enough to claim agnosticism as my religion cam - mixed with a little mysticism and a bucketload of scepticism.

As that great philosopher Oscar Wilde once said, "i am not young enough to know everything".

same Ru... my 'religion' if it is one is to question everything, and try to find a solution, if there is one. I'm quite comfortable with the agnostic label.
Rand Corp is buddhism really a polytheistic religion? After all they don't really believe in a god, as such, at all. As far as I know.

Ah, I see.

However, given that anyone, even you I'd suspect, would acknowledge the existance of many gods in the minds, theologies and histories of the world's various civilizations, what is it that makes your god the one true god?
What makes you certain? And are you saying there are indeed many gods but only yours is true and correct? Or, are you saying that in actuality all these other gods don't exist and only your's does?

I'm always quite fascinated by the way in which people are happy to have a discussion about faith as long as it is their particular faith that is being discussed!

Funny that in my Bible it says their is only one God.....i'll stick with that Wink

Cam! You mean there are only two of them? One of each?
Or is this merely a gross generalization?

FWIW, I certinly don't claim to be athiest, I acknowledge the possibility of theism but my views on it are decidedly Kantian and therefore exploritiry. I'm just a little bewildered/facinated by the motivation (of most it would appear) to feel compelled to insist that one faith is right and another wrong when it is after all something that has to be taken on faith!

Having lived and worked for many years in coutries that were predominantly hindi or buddhist or daoist or shinto, where the major western religions are minority religions, where they too all think they've got it right and everyone else wrong; I guess I just have a different perspective on things, I'm not prepared to take things merely on faith but to explore each phylisophical possibility.

To me it is as natural to question one's faith as it is to question whether Chris Tarrant should've been dropped for his indescretions or if Heath Shaw should be moved into the midfield!
