Jimmy Barnes backs rally
John Masanauskas
November 14, 2006

FORMER Cold Chisel frontman and rock legend Jimmy Barnes will be the main act at a mass union rally at the MCG on November 30.

Barnes, 50, will perform classics including Working Class Man in a show of support for the campaign against WorkChoices.
He will be paid, but ACTU secretary Greg Combet said yesterday he was happy with the deal.

"They (Barnes' minders) have expressed enthusiasm to perform there," he said.

"There is always some political pressure that gets put around the place on public figures who attend or support our cause. It takes a clear decision to be involved in things like this."

and a bloody shame I won't be there!

I have a new job, will have been there a month on Thursday, and am on 3 month probation, which most jobs have, so i can't see myself actually taking the day off for a day of action however much i believe in it and want to be there.

I will be there in spirit though.

I will be with you all in spirit.

I have still been doing a lot of voluntary work behind the scenes for the Your Rights At Work campaign and will continue to do so.

WORTH FIGHTING FOR!

PM attacks Victorian teachers
November 29, 2006

VICTORIAN teachers have been attacked by Prime Minister John Howard for protesting when they should be teaching.

And he said they were lowering confidence in the government school system by planning to attend an ACTU rally at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday.
The teachers should protest in their own time, Mr Howard said.

Australian Education Union (AEU) Victorian president Mary Bluett has predicted hundreds of Victorian schools would shut or have just a skeleton staff on Thursday with the big union rally against federal industrial relations laws at the MCG.

She said teachers, principals and school staff from across the state would begin driving to Melbourne as early as 5am (AEDT) on Thursday.

"They shouldn't be gathering in Melbourne on Thursday, they should be at school on Thursday," Mr Howard told federal parliament.
