Union's book ground for protest
John Masanauskas
August 02, 2006 12:00am

UNIONS have booked the hallowed turf of the MCG for a mass rally against the Howard Government's industrial laws. The move to use the "People's Ground'' has divided sporting greats.

The Victorian Trades Hall Council and the ACTU will use the "People's Ground" to push the anti-WorkChoices cause.
Tens of thousands of protesters are expected to pack the stands and the ground for the November 30 rally, which will feature well-known entertainers.

More are expected to watch on giant video screens in Yarra Park, and workers around the nation will see it in pubs and clubs via satellite TV.

It could cost the unions at least $250,000 to hire the ground, based on what concert promoters have paid in the past.

I'll be there with the Latrobe (or Deakin - maybe both!) Your Rights @ Work Community Campaign.

And, we're looking for helpers in those two electorates, so if you live in either of those electorates and would like to be involved in a community campaign, pm me.

you don't have to be a radical to be concerned about Work Choices.

A lot of elderly people don't realise how it will affect them. The aged pension (and other Centrelink payments) are based on a percentage of the Basic Wage. If the basic wage drops, what happens to those payments?

Did you know that the Basic Wage in America has NOT changed for 15 years! People are working for around $5.75 an hour, there's no penalty rates. These are the working poor. They need 3 jobs just to pay the rent.

Don't think it can happen here? Think again!

*steps off the soapbox*

Cricketers would be easy, but either way is fine by me.

PP I know you're trying to include everyone in the events and protests and thats your job (love to hear it!) but i really was just kidding. Still in this day and age it has to be said that the minority of people who bother to go protest can statistically be called radicals. But good on them/us!

Comeon guys lets start up a decent sized group and make some noise where it might matter

ummmmmm not my job at all. I'm a community volunteer. I'm actually unemployed at the present time, but this is something I firmly believe in.

Unions book MCG
September 06, 2006
12:00am

UNIONS and the MCC are today expected to confirm a deal to hire the MCG for a mass rally of up to 100,000 workers against the Howard Government's WorkChoices industrial laws.

The ACTU and Trades Hall will hold a news conference at the ground to announce details of the rally set for November 30.
The Herald Sun revealed last month that the move to use the hallowed turf had divided sporting greats.
