Scalper faces legal action over ticket sales
From: By Jim Wilson
July 18, 2006
A SERIAL scalper accused of charging inflated prices for tickets to major sporting events and rock concerts is facing legal action over his practices.

Confessed scalper Craig Jones is accused of singling out English cricket supporters for the eagerly awaited Ashes series.
Mr Jones has allegedly used different names and addresses in the scheme and has been marking up ticket prices by as much as 1000 per cent on eBay.

A special Herald Sun investigation found Mr Jones in Brisbane's south and immediately told Cricket Australia of his identity and whereabouts.

The batch of Ashes tickets Mr Jones was waiting for will be cancelled. But most have already been sold to English fans, who face huge financial loss having already booked airfares and accommodation.

Mr Jones had ordered more than 50 tickets, using various names, through the Australian Cricket Family scheme that was designed to give fans a fair and affordable chance to buy Ashes tickets.

Cricket Australia has strict guidelines and conditions to stop scalpers rorting the system.

But scalpers around the country have abused it and CA claims false names have been used.

A similar case has emerged in Perth where confessed scalper Bart Parsons has admitted to snaring 127 tickets, including 76 for cricket at the MCG alone this summer.

He has admitted to buying the tickets, again under various names, for less than $50 and charging $1157 a pair on eBay.

Mr Parsons has also been tracked down and will appear on Channel 9's A Current Affair tonight.

"We will now act on this and cancel all the tickets and their bar codes, so they will be useless," Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young said.

"As for those people who've bought the tickets, we told them buyer beware, and warned them against purchasing tickets from these people."

Mr Jones has sold about 60 tickets on eBay, but with them now cancelled he faces an angry response from fans who paid exorbitant prices for the Ashes series.

Until now, his whereabouts and true identity were unknown to senior CA officials.

He had used different names and addresses in charging fans inflated prices for big-ticket sporting events and even rock concerts.

"What I'm doing is not illegal and it's like playing the stock market," Mr Jones told the Herald Sun.

"If someone is fortunate enough to get information and they get it first before everyone else, then fair enough. They then on-sell it to someone who wants it."

The cancelled tickets will almost certainly be resold to cricket fans.

eBay is refusing to ban Mr Jones and others from advertising and he continues to do business here and overseas. While there's no legislation to prosecute Mr Jones, CA says it is within its rights to cancel his tickets.

Mr Jones had listed several other addresses on eBay, including his mother's unit in Brisbane, a house in Noosa Heads and business premises on the Gold Coast.

It is believed the Australian Rugby Union has been monitoring him for two years. It is now considering legal action after he allegedly broke an assurance last year that he would stop his practices.

The ARU discovered this week a credit card belonging to a relative of Mr Jones was used to buy at least 32 tickets for rugby internationals against South Africa and New Zealand.

The ARU has cancelled Mr Jones's tickets but there are concerns fans will turn up unaware tickets have been cancelled.

Interesting the tickets get cancelled...Cricket Australia is at fault... promised to deliver scalper free ticket distribution, then blame eBay etc for the problem. They are the problem, in essence, they're scalpers themselves (though those tickets are described as 'corporate packages'.

Once someone has bought something, it'st heirs to resell. you live in a market economy or you don't.
