Crying or Very sad Just passed on to me at this wee hour, by fellow Nickster Troppo.Desmond Dekker has passed away.

Forget everything you know about reggae and modern 2nd and third wave ska. For those too young to remember and for those with an ounce of interest in the music that pre cursed reggae. Get out those scratchy dance hall 45's or check it out on the net. Skank one more time to the "King of Ska" or to the famous "Israelites", or "It Mek". Desmond, the Legend and one of my all time heroes is dead at 64, apparently from a heart attack. His old partner Prince Buster will join him in one more "ghost dance", but he is and will ever be the KING OF SKA.

R.I.P Desmond. Sad

I think our resident musical snob is just reminding us that Desmond Dekker is not Mozart.

Just ignore the snooty little poonce.

By the way, Skaman ... have you ever tried to decipher the lyrics to "the Israelites" ... I saw them written down once and couldn't, for the life of me, reconcile them to how they sounded.

Mind you, that was back in the 1960s, before Jamaican accents became fashionable.

Many years ahead of his time was Desmond Dekker.

Thanks, Greg.

Interesting way with words, that man had ... fascinating syntax. I remember it completely mesmerised me back then. Couldn't make head nor tail of it.

Reckon he might have influenced the Beatles "Ob-la-di Ob-la-da".

Thank God he wasnt Mozart, that way we wont fall asleep when listening to HIS music.
As you know Greg, there is a minimum level of intelligence required to appreciate complex music created by a genius, you stick to your 40 year old 4 chords pounded out by dead drug addicts

Toots and the Maytals sung a song called Desmond Dekker came first. Says it all really, he was a pioneer of his time.
Thanks for the lyrics Greg to Isralites, fantastic song. Funny singing along to the words, nearly got them all right! Embarassed
Aceofstace...why comment on a subject if you have got nothing constructive to add? Its a tribute to a brilliant musician, not a thread to start petty debates about certain types of music. FFS get a grip! Time and place for everything.

I heard about this on friday very sad. There was a great special on him on sunday on PBS on Blue Juice. " Get Up a Diner girl" what a great song. But I think "007 Shanty Town" will always be my favourite Desmond Dekker song. R.I.P Desmond Dekker.
