Gday

My sister in law in Victoria is looking to purchase a new Mazda 6 Luxury Sports Sedan.

Has anyone brought one of these and if so how much did you pay, or if you are in the industry - whats the cheapest I can get them for.

Thanks for your help.

Go Pies!!!

you could check out www.drive.com.au

I did hear a huge wrap for the Mazda 3 the other day from a motoring writer. Said if you were gonna buy a corolla, go for the Mazda 3. So, I would presume that the Mazda 6 would be better than the Camry.

The Mazda's quality is questionable at times.

http://www.mazda.com.au/articleZone5.asp?articleZoneID=4485

2 "Car of the Year" winners in the last 4 years.
Plus every passenger car they have released in the past 5 years has finished top ten in the same competition.

Yeah, that questionable quality isn't it?
Unlike a big car maker like Mitsu, who of course are broke and HAVE to cut corners to survive.

There is a reason the Mazda was not included in this group

Yes, there is a reason, a very valid reason.
If you bother to read the article Tess, it's page 80 of the May issue of Wheels. In the Contents, the article is titled;
"Megatest : Big Sixes"
Now, I'm not sure what makes you think that the Australian Mazda6 has a 6 cylinder engine, but being ignorant of the fact it is only a four is not an excuse to link it to this article.

I have test driven a Mazda6 luxury and found it to be lacking in only a couple of areas. The passenger seat is manual, not electric like the drivers seat. This is an omission that should not have been made in this level of car.
The only other drawback is the requirement for the 4 cylinder to run exclusively on Premium petrol. An issue in this day and age, but there are more and more cars requiring the better fuel to satisfy emission regulations.
Apart from those issues, it really is a very good vehicle that will give many years of hassle free motoring.

I'de be inclinced to look at the current Camry or the Last of the Magnas.

OMG!
The last of the Magnas?
The resale value of a Magna is terrible. Drive it away and see 60% of your investment disappear when you first hit the tarmac!
I thought Mitsu were doing the right thing by holding the line on the 380 in terms of price. I hoped they would not crumble to protect their customers bottom line.
They have failed in this respect and, like Holden was forced to do after dropping the price of the "Adventra" by 2K months after it's release, I would expect the early buyers of the 380 to get a refund cheque in the mail.
Buying any Aussie made Mitsu at the moment is, unfortunately for Australian manufacturing, a purchase you will regret in the future.

Oh, my alternate recommendation for purchase over the Mazda6?
The Honda Accord Euro.
Excellent vehicle.
Just don't mistake the Honda Accord for it. The accord is a pig, the Euro a gem.

It's in need of an upgrade.

**cough***cough****

Tess, now don't show your bias of this car so much. I know it's only because it's a MAzda and that you want me to respond.
Well respond I will, with more facts;

Mazda is 'selling' the update as "A great car gets even better". For once, we're going to have to agree with the hype. Along with the Honda Accord Euro, the Mazda 6 has been our 'most recommended' car since its launch in August 2002. The latest incarnation loses none of the vibrancy nor verve of the original car and arrives cheaper, more refined and, if initial impressions are anything to go on, even better to drive.

This article was August 2005. The upgrade has occurred and has been hailed as a success.

Quote:
Far from fading away, the medium car segment, in which the 6 holds court, is arguable the most vibrant Down Under. Honda's Accord Euro and Accord VTi, Subaru Liberty, Toyota Camry, Holden Vectra, Hyundai's revitalized Sonata and Volkswagen's more competitively priced Passat are all in there punching. Add the French brands, Alfa and the lower-spec Audi A4 and it's easy to see we're spoiled for choice.

In our mind the closest battle lies between the Euro and 6 - these two great cars are line-ball in many aspects.

Pssstt....it would be nice if you acknowledge your misleading statement about the Mazda6 and its omission from the wheels comparison test.

Thanks for the input guys.

Eunos, you seem to be the man!!!!

So she is after a brand new one (Mazda 6 can't convince her of the Honda yet!!), do you have any idea what they go for. I know the RRP but what do they really go for???

Thanks again for your input - educated and researched!

I would expect to be able to get a minimum $4,000 discount if you shop between dealers and you are flexible in color choice. Discounts seem more likely when you deal on floor stock. If you want a specific color that needs to be ordered in, the discount will not be as great.
Also, make sure you ask each dealer for any demo model they may have. These will have under 5.000kms on them and will save a great deal of money due to the fact they have been registered. Be aware though they may be '05 build dates. This will reflect in future resale value.
The unfortunate thing with Mazda at the moment is their popularity. They have come from nowhere in the last 5 years to be the top "import only" dealer network. This is stunning considering the pricing point Mazda have.
http://www.autoindustries.com.au/sales/2006/3/
As Tess has pointed out, the Koreans can pump out cars like crazy at a very low price.
Just also to comment on Tess's point on fuel economy. Do not buy a Mazda if fuel economy is important to you. They have always been relatively thirsty as Mazda believe in "drivability" before such trivial matters as fossil fuel consumption. It is part of their "DNA".
A part I love. Even Mazda 2's are fun to drive! But the RX-8 is superb, if a bit cramped. 180kmh in an MX-5, with the top down, and still being able to have a conversation without shouting, was a revelation in drop top driving.
One final point, you may read about road noise on some models being intrusive over certain road surfaces. I believe this to be Mazda's insistence on using Bridgestone tyres. Very good tyres, but very noisy. A change to Goodyear has always benefited me on the 2 Mazda's, 2 Eunos's that I have owned.

Good luck in your search for the best deal.
Give us an update after its all done.

Thanks for your help Eunos.

She brought a demo 06 RX8 with about 4k on the clock. She is in love!

Once she saw the RX8 she didn't even test drive the 6!!!!

Oh, ah.....

Yeah, I saw the ads for the RX-8 demo's.
Absolutely beautiful cars and being a demo would be at the right price.

Hope it's a manual. Unfortunately rotary's are a bit thirsty and require you to change your driving habits slightly, but boy do they go!

If it's not to rude, how much, what color and where from?

I love the Mazdas, would have gotten a Mazda 3 for my first car but the delay in getting 1 was too long, was about a 3 month wait at that point and I needed a car asap

I think she paid just under $50K on the road, it is red but not sure which dealership she got it at. Yep it's a manual and she loves it.

Can't wait to get over to melbourne to take it for a spin!
