DISHLICKERS have celebrated 10 years of the Greyhound Adoption Program, which helps save hundreds of failed racing dogs from certain death.

The program finds new homes for unwanted racing dogs that fail to set the track on fire.
Despite a decades-old image as a muzzled, dangerous breed, greyhounds are in fact low-energy, placid, layabout dogs who love a happy family life. GAP co-ordinator Larissa Hubbard said the 2000th greyhound was expected to be re-housed by the end of the year.

"Since we moved to Seymour, the program has really taken off, with about eight greyhounds adopted into family life a week," she said.

GAP celebrated its first decade with a special greyhound race night on Saturday.

Guests toured facilities before being entertained by clowns, stall-holders and magicians.

But new owners are still needed for dozens of dogs who have been handed over for adoption by owners or unsuccessful trainers.

Call GAP on 5799 2909 or see www.grv.org.au/adoption

I'm not sure of the statistics, but I do know that of all the greyhounds that are bred for racing purposes, only a very tiny percentage ever make it to the races, let alone actually win a race.

I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence, but greyhound racing tracks tend to be located in areas not far from suburbs in which there are lots of Asian shops and restaurants ... Angle Park in Adelaide is close to Hanson Road ... and Melbourne's Sandown Park is not far from Springvale.

Not that I'm suggesting anything Wink

No, not unless the state's quota of abandoned moggies suddenly dries up...
