Post subject: Petrol Stations boost salesReply with quote

I have been thinking about the petrol price fixing fiasco from a business point of veiw.

If my business was flat out on the last 2 days of the working week, but struggling the other days, I would discount my products on the slow days to boost sales.

Petrol stations have dropped the price of petrol early in the week to boost their sales. How many times do you buy something else while paying for your petrol? Sure, the profit might be 10 cents less on petrol sales, which the stations keep telling us that they don't make much on petrol anyway, but people are buying Milk Bread Coke Smokes etc etc, that they would normally go to the corner store to buy. Petrol Stations have, with the help of the Media and RACV, RAA etc, increased their sales without having to pay a cent for advertising.

Congratulations on a fantastic marketing move!

..mega litres of petrol is sold everyday. But most people are paid once a week.

The way I see it is; early week petrol prices are "common" but come payday (thursday) the price is increased for extra greedy profit.

Oil barrons and Bankers dictate to the people of the world, don't ever forget it.

Hey EBB, wouldn't it be funny if everybody on the planet went on strike for 24 hours or more? Nobody goes to work, the almighty $ at a standstill, so the stockmarket stops, corrupt politicians get threats from Moneymen who grant their kick-backs and thus parasite oil companys choke on their stockpiles. I'd like to see that!
Now where would i get an idea like that from?

… We’ve probably read the same-simple-logical literature.

Also, It’s easy to expose (the strike) to the masses of petrol consumers, problem is, convincing them to participate in a sound resolution that will end the daily ‘petrol price’ whine.

Yep, sacrificing 2-3 days wage is not a huge lose, in the long run, petrol will become more economical for everyone. (The ‘strike’ can also be applied to the price of fruit & veggies)..anything!

I'm sensing the creation of a lefty political union...

I want in!

No really, i don't think you can single out petrol companies for greed more than any others. They simply have a commodity with more demand then most, thereby giving them huge bargaining and political powers. That's the system, don't go after the symptom, treat the whole bloody cause...

On the subject of a general strike, great idea but very difficult to implement in western societies (apart from france and some of europe that have strong civic traditions). The majority of the population has been placified with consumer goods and is politically numb.

I think given 20 years or so the IR reforms will have screwed everything up so badly that the next generation will be return to a 60's sort of vibe. Essentially, I think people at the stage of capitalism we have reached in the west will only really fight for their pocketbook. This would predict that one generation fights hard for gains, which the next doesn't protect too strongly because they are taken for granted. The third generation are outraged by shitty conditions and fight hard for gains again, etc.

The only solution to this cyclical, self-interested bullshit is a decent civic education at schools and a strong independent media, but neither are very sexy policy issues are they.

Any ideas guys? I'm desperate for something to believe in.

Sherrife, I'm not familiar with your statement, it's not in my Thesaurus. Shocked

Yeah, believe in the power of the people!

..and let me quote Dyso below; (#bold and font enlargement is mine)

"if everybody on the planet went on strike for 24 hours or more? Nobody goes to work, the almighty $ at a standstill, so the stockmarket stops, corrupt politicians get threats from Moneymen who grant their kick-backs and thus parasite oil companys choke on their stockpiles."

P.S Remember, a 24hr+ strike can be applied to anything! Idea

If everybody on the planet went on strike for 24 hours, I think a lot of people would die. For starters. And it wouldn't just be the "parasite oil companys" feeling the pain, we all would.

You must have been one of those idiots buying up big on Easter Tuesday. The shops shut for one day and you would think someone had detonated the atomic bomb!
People dying because of a 24hour shutdown? Really?

not that I recall Eunos, I think I was home sick actually :p

it's really pretty obvious. Everyone on the planet goes on strike? People in hospitals go on strike. People who control electricity go on strike. People who control water and all that stuff go on strike. Just the logical step on from Dyso and EBB's suggestion.
