*Age Caroline Wilson article link*
| Quote: | | THE AFL has provoked a showdown with its most powerful club, Collingwood, by finally decreeing that every club in the competition must design "an alternate" jumper by the end of next month. |
| Quote: | "Here's a newsflash for the AFL," said McGuire. "Collingwood wears black and white stripes. There are two things the AFL cannot tell Collingwood. One is where to play and the other is what to wear.
"We have played every game in the history of the AFL in black and white stripes. We've been doing that since 1892. When the competition started in 1896 we were the only club with vertical stripes. We're not about to change that because somebody in the AFL marketing department got an itch."

Reminds me of that scene in Braveheart when the English (AFL) are charging towards Mel (Ed) and the boys and Ed is saying "Hold...Hold".
It hasn't been an issue for years, crivens, I used to be able to watch the Pies vs North on a black and white tele no problem, why do we have to change now? |

I hope Eddie is going to defend our Tradition to the end. This quote although heartening, makes me think of Victoria Park though!
| Quote: | | "This is the thing that binds football clubs together and once you start tampering with your heritage then you're tampering with your club." |
While Carlton and Essendon seem to have a different view on the AFL's power to force a change.
Is Eddie just blowing hot air for our benefit?
| Quote: | | Carlton chief executive Michael Malouf said: "The club hasn't reached an official position on this, but the board is aware that we need to consider a clash jumper. Our legal advice is that the AFL's licensing rules dictate this and we're looking at designs at a management level." |
| Quote: | Essendon president Neil McKissock said yesterday that the Bombers' new guernsey — which would be worn between one and three times during the premiership season — would be predominantly red.
"We threw around a few designs at our last board meeting and we won't be moving away from red and black," said McKissock. "They have written a rule which has mandated that we wear an away jumper when we play Richmond, Melbourne and St Kilda in away games. It is under the terms of the new AFL licensing agreement and we have to comply because it overrides our constitution." |

What are they going to do, if we don't do it? They going to take us to court (that will be a great PR exercise for the AFL...not)? Are they going to tell us we can't play?
Why is this an issue NOW? Why wasn't this an issue at any othe time throughout the history of the game? I've NEVER has a problem telling teams apart. If it has become an issue now, look at the team that have changed their jumper already, ie. North - why can't they just wear that kangaroo top against us? Is there that many blind people out there? Is it such an issue for teams that is causes multitudes of goals against teams as a direct result of a colour clash?
This is utter crap, and the AFL has got to STOP stuffing with the game. Keep screwing with something that wasn't broken in the first place, and eventually......................it will brake.
Eddie:
| Quote: | | "The Kangaroos have worn various jumpers over the years and they are very good about doing the right thing by us just as we support them getting money from the competitive balance fund," said McGuire. "We gave up our licensing rights in the mid-'80s for the sake of the competition and the least the AFL can do is protect our brand. |

There is no problem - it is a non issue. Collingwood have always worn B&W stripes, and we shouldn't bow to AFL pressure. Bunch of sooks - we have survived for 100 years without one - we can do it for another 100.
I just hope Essendon and Carlton hold firm - fix your eyesight if you have troubles!
But really, well done to Eddie for continuing to fight the good fight. Keep it up, Ed, you're doing us proud! |

Yes, they will take us to court as we sold out to the then VFL in the 80's.

| While I don't mind the away jersey, it's a joke we have seemed to survive for a century in the black and white stripes I don't see why we have to change now. |

Tess, that was a decision made by ALL clubs for the good of the game. I think I'm right in saying they followed the NFL model. _________________ Nick's is free. Please help to keep this show on the road:

Whilst Eddie presides over the Collingwood football club it will not happen when Ed goes it probably will happen.
A stark message to anyone in favour of Collingwood having an alternative strip ' you aint collingwood ' ' you never were ' and probably never will be.
All bullshit aside on this one we dont need an alternative strip, for whatever reason when one thinks of Collingwwod the first thing that comes to mind is the Black and White vertical stripes.
It is who we are and we will fight whoever that decides one day we must have an alternative jumper.
We will gladly do it for those who have come before us and for those who will follow in the future.
The only reason the AFL want us in one is to make bucket loads of money from merchandise sales, i find the whole thing demeaning the collingwood football club. _________________ Joffa The Movie Australia wide Cinema release 2nd September 2010. Melbourne Perth Adelaide Brisbane Tasmania.

Did anybody watch Freo v Blues - that jumper clash was crazy. As they were playing in late afternoon sunlight, I couldn't pick 'em out readily without consciously looking to the shorts...
I for one don't remember anybody running a lap of honour in 1990 in the current strip - bring back the old black stripes & number on white background permanently and create a jumper with thinner stripes to create a more white look (not as extreme as the freo away jumper) with a black number, white shorts, hooped socks and possibly a Magpie emblem somewhere and all should be OK.
Can't see McGuire's point really, he should step down to Committee level and let a Melbourne based Committee Member take over the presidency sooner than the rumoured end of the year! |

There's a very simple solution to stop this nonsense quick smart.
The club can take all the legal avenues and use official methods of protecting the jumper.
The fans can simply boycott every away game we play where it's mandated we wear a clash jumper - ie St.Kilda, Hawthorn, Kangaroos, Port. Not only would we cripple those clubs in terms of budgeted revenue, but also collectively, when we don't turn up to 4 away games it puts an enormous dent in the economy.
Before you know it, those clubs are begging for us to be allowed to wear Black and White stripes saying that "there really is no clash, after all." |

And another important factor is, it is written in the clubs constitution the black and white vertical stripes can never be changed or altered in any way!!
The whole thing has to go to the members of the collingwood football club we can all sleep easily it's never gonna happen and thank god!!
