After Kraft sacked 150 staff and their spokesperson said the products will still look and taste the same. Well it's leaving a sour taste in my mouth. I love my vegemite and if they believe making everything in China to save dollars will make me keener to buy their products their kidding themselves.

Kraft as of today is off my menu. I am going to miss my Vegimite, but I do have principals.

They wish to pay their workers less to cut costs. At the moment the Chinese will work in any conditions for minimal return. It’s a fast growing market like Japan in the 70’s and Taiwan in the 80’s. For every person who loses a job the flow on affect is we will have another person who loses their job from that. They love paying their workers less, but do the CEO’s of these companies have their income based on a Chinese CEO's income? No of course not. With the introduction of the new IR laws you best get ready to work for a bowl of rice, but don’t worry as our Government says you should be happy you have a job.

Here's a little ditty from the 70s that some of you might remember. It's about another great "australian" icon ... Arnott's biscuits.

You know, you wouldn't be an Aussie
You wouldn't be true blue
Unless Arnott's biscuits meant something to you

Arnott's are Australian
I'll give it to you straight
Arnotts are Australian as "How ya goin', mate".

If you couldn't mark a ball
If you couldn't hold a bat
If you don't know where that dog on his tucker box is at
Then you wouldn't be an Aussie
You wouldn't be true blue
Unless Arnott's biscuits meant something to you.

Does anyone know where they make Arnott's biscuits these days?

Who are you talking about? That is a very original thought. Do not ask me any more questions please. I like the way you talk.

Did not Arnott's go off shore in the late 90's?

The manufacturing industry in Australia is dying. It's a huge problem and workers that are 40+ who lose their jobs would struggle to get another.

It's unfortuante consequence of the high cost of manufacturing in Australia. Manufacturing is something Australia will never be able to compete in, and more should be done to find areas where Australia could possibly have a competitive advantage over other countries.

It's not the high cost here Joel, it's that the Chinese will work for nothing as they do not have the same cost of living as our workers do.

What do we do, live in shacks with 20 people so we can compete?

exactly the same as outsourcing to the Indian IT market. They work for next to nothing. Can't compete with that.

And yes, i was disgusted when I heard about Kraft.

As for Arnotts, they were sold off to another American Conglomerate and i don't believe they actually have manufacturing site here, so all of it is imported...which, impacts our Trade Deficit figures....and now so will Kraft.

In the US companies are listed that outsource in India etc. A few companies have reveresed their decisions from consumer backlash. The same should happen here.

Kraft still operate a factory in Strathmerton.
My neighbour 4 blocks down works there, as does my niece's boyfriend.
They are now both nervous.

You are joking aren't you Tess?

Ed needs to comment on this? Why?
Is he a politician?
Is he a union leader?

No!

He is a TV personality/commentator/ AFL President.

I fail to see any link.

Keep your bias under wraps please.l

I don't buy vegemite since i discovered the much tastier AUSSIEMITE !

Why is it like it is ? Look at all the KIAs , HYUNDAIS and DAEWOOS that aussies flock to buy.

I'm even putting toilet bowls in from India , basins from Turkey and anywhere else cheap imported shit can be found.
We have ourselves to blame.

It's the same when people bitch 'n moan about petrol prices yet they pay $2.20 for a can of coke at the same servo they're getting the juice for 2c a litre cheaper Confused

Your right in what you say, the trouble is our manufacturing sector is very minimal now. So most products you wish to buy Australian made is because you cannot. Free and Open trade which was suppose to mean it would be great for our country has worked in reverse.

vegemite is the stuff that they tube into grease guns to lubricate joints on heavy vehicles is it not? It's hideous stuff.

i wonder how many 'australians' who have come here in the last 15 years know where the dog on the tuckerbox sits...
