Packer dies, Nine announces

27dec05
Media magnate and Australia's richest man Kerry Packer has died, the Nine Network has announced.

Today show announcer Richard Wilkins said he had just been handed official confirmation of Mr Packer's death at 68. The statement from Tony Ritchie, Nine head of news, said: "Mrs Kerry Packer and her children James and Gretel sadly report the passing last evening of her husband and their father Kerry.

"He died peacefully at home with his family at his bedside.

"He will be lovingly remembered and missed enormously. Arrangements for a memorial service will be announced.''

They will want continuity as much as possible in the short term future. The most interesting question will be whether young Packer ends up "blowing" the business.

It often goes that one generation starts and builds a business, the next expands it into something major ....... and the following generation mucks it up.

One does not have to like or agree with a man to respect him, and that is my view of Mr KFB Packer. With regard to his son's judgement, we have the evidence of OneTel on the board.

A lot of things shit me about Nine but I'd rather not see a successful business go down the S bend.

The bookmakers of Australia will be shattered. They've just lost half their income.

It's also a bad day for charities. Packer may have been a ruthless capitalist, but he gave many millions of dollars to charities.

A great man, who I admire greatly ... in spite of everything he stood for.

No doubt they'll make a movie of his life ... and it will be the biggest blockbuster since Citizen Kane.

In fact, Kerry Packer was the Citizen Kane of our time.

I just hope nobody wears black to his funeral. Everyone should turn up in multi-coloured pyjamas.

R.I.P. Goanna ... may you join T.J.Smith at the Great Randwick in the Sky (which we know doesn't exist because you've already been there and told us Wink )

How can Packer be the Charles Foster Kane of our time... Kerry didn't even own a newspaper.

Murdoch would be the Charles Foster Kane (or William Randolph Hearst) of our time.
