| Post subject: Where would the Pies be without immigrants? |  |

Was disgusted by the Sydney rubbish the other weekend.
Made me think about the contribution communities such as Lebanese, Greeks, Italians, Yugoslavs etc have made to this great club.
We would be nothing without their contribution.
The media make a big deal out of one tiny part of a minority community and that community is tainted and the rednecks go crazy.
As a Pies member I welcome all communities to the Club as part of the family and look forward to more muslim, asian, european etc members, leaders, players and supporters in the future.

This is not to disagree with your point, as I agree wholeheartedly!!
Was actually working in Sydney this week and have been sickened by the images coming through.
But I was actually trying to recall any Lebanese player at Collingwood and couldn't. I think Mil Hanna (Carlton) was Lebanese, but can't recall any others.
Certainly the game has had its share of European races - mainly Italians and Greeks - as well as many from a Slavic background.
Then some rarities...
Specifically at Collingwood
An Asian - Danny Seow
A Samoan - Fatui Atata
A Papuan - Mal Michael
Be interesting to see how many kids of Asian descent start to come into AFL ranks over the next 10 years. |

Well said Big T.
When so many people are born into the Collingwood family you find that as people grow up our support base transends race, social economic, gender, and sexuality boundaries.
Although we must not forget that we have had problems with racism in our club e.g. Nicky Winmar, and problems with other issues as well such as sexuality.
As a Sydneysider I have felt disgusted at what has happened in Sydney over the last week. In Cronulla people were almost lynched for being non-white, all while they sang songs like 'Advance Australia Fair', 'I am, You are, We are Australian', and draped themselved in the Australian flag. (many of those attacked were not even Lebanese).
Think back only a month ago when the Socceroos were playing Uruguay in the World Cup qualifier how unified we seemed as a country. Now those 'Aussie Aussie Aussie' chants seem a little tarnished.
What is good though is the residents of those communities that have been tarnished by these actions have started to speak up against what happened in the name of their community.
For those who feel they want to express their support for diversity in Australia, they can head down to one of the two Harmony gatherings that have been organised on Sunday. I will be there to show my support for diversity and peace in this country.

It's a two way street as soon as both sides realise they are equal the issues we are facing will not go away; they will actually accelerate into anarchy.
Your attitude "we would be nothing without their contribution" is a perfect example of the ONE way street. We are ONE community which made our great club. |

The problem was that 6 people from the Cronulla area were killed in the Bali bombing. There is a memorial site in Cronulla for these people. This is where the first riots actually began. The tensions have been simmering underneath since the Bali bombing. I believe a group of Lebanese youths belted up or threw rocks at a lifeguard, which started the initial altercation.
Racism works both ways and AngloSaxon's shouldn't have to be abused in their own country either. |

People who come to this country have to first and foremost understand Our Rules and Our Culture.
We appreciate we have to be tolerant as well but this is Our Country and if people are disrespectful to Us, Australians they should expect to be dealt with. |

Wouldn't "their own country" then be England or Saxony?
What about our mighty supporters of Greek or Italian or Celtic descent - is it "their country" too, or are they just allowed to be abused in it?

We are Australian.
Celtic, English, Greek, Italian, Vietnamese, Asain, Murri have all asimilated into Australian culture and except the standards and ideals.
We have been lucky enough to pick up some absolutely fantastic things from each of their cultures as well which has redefined what it is to be Australian.
I don't remember any of these cultures blowing other Australians up. |

Problem is, most of these so called ethnics were born right here in Australia....... So it is, with all due respect, their country too. Regardless of their race, religion etc - if someone breaks the law (ie: belting a lifeguard) they should be dealt with accordingly by the law, not the public.
Its a messy situation. Thankfully, Melbourne is way too cultured and multicultural to ever be subject to that sort of shit.

Unfortunately people have seen what has happened overseas and realise just how powerless the lawmakers are. The NSW Government and Police Force are just as culpable as anyone in this mess.
Rules need to be obeyed and enforced. But people need to have confidence in the system else it spirals out of control. They have then taken the law into their own hands as vigilantes.
I agree Melbourne is far more cultured than Sydney which is a total red neck hick town. It is like a cheap hooker drinking a bottle of aftershave.
This is one of the reasons Melbourne always comes first or second in the world's most livable city. Cause it is. |
