In their wisdom, Sony/BMG have started installing anti-piracy software on their pre-recorded CD's.....but......

Let us change the subject. What you said was either too complex or too simple for me.

Wonder what happens on a Linux system.

It was stated that the Mac system was immune to this virus. No mention of Linux.

Typical Sony. These are the scumbags who want to enforce Regional Coding for DVDs.

Regional coding sucks... its an outdated policy that should be scrapped. Luckily in Australia we can get multi-region DVD players, as there are many movies that you simply cannot get on DVD here. For example I bought 1984 from england, braindead from America and Pi from America (it is available here but its very hard to get and generally pretty expensive)... if regional coding was enforced I assume that you wouldn't be able to see these movies unless you went to a video store and got a bad VHS version.

Apparently, one of the courts has now made it legal to install a mod chip into PS2's, X-Box's, etc, as they felt that region coding was anti-competitive, or something like that.

Also, if your DVD player allows it, you can punch in a special code that will over-ride the existing region coding so that you can purchase movies from overseas.

All this info is easy to find, just google for it.

My only DVD player was my ps2, which unfortunately set to one region.. I can't remember exactly but I think the mod chips are a bit expensive and you risk damaging the machine. As for other DVD players, it seems that about 95% in Australia are either region-free or allow you to type in some code as mentioned by Dale above. Thank God we don't live in America where region-free DVD players are illegal.

DfC, if you get a mod chip installed by someone who knows what they are doing, then you shouldn't get any damage.

All a mod chip does is override the motherboard settings when it looks for the region code.

I had my first PS chipped when it was illegal to do so as I had access to games from Japan. Pity I couldn't read Japanese as I could only guess how to play the game.

I bet all the chippers at the Laverton market will have a marked increase in business.
