IT WAS a near catastrophe for dozens of Lost Dogs' Home cats this week.
Bad enough that they were on death row, counting down the days left for someone to offer them a new home.
But for the first time in 16 years, the Lost Dogs' Home and Western Cat Shelter ran out of cat food.
The home's annual food supply is met by public donation, with thousands of cans dropped in charity bins in the lead-up to Christmas.
But a drop in the number of donations last year -- and a surge in the numbers of cats at the North Melbourne animal shelter -- meant the cats faced a hungry week.
But when pet food manufacturer Whiskas heard about the pussies' plight, it sprang to action.
Dozens of cans were whisked off supermarket shelves and hand-delivered to North Melbourne. Whiskas is now arranging a truck-load to be delivered next week. Jane Brook from Whiskas said the company could not stand by when it knew cats were hungry.
"We are here for the cats of Melbourne and this was a very worthy cause," Ms Brook said.
But with more than 40 cats at the shelter, more food donations are still needed. Cans can be dropped in at 2 Gracie St, North Melbourne.
