Recruiters are also largely victims of the draft order they select players, Hine no different to the other recruiters. There's nothing a recruiter can do if the player they want gets recruited with the pick before they get to pick. I would have thought a success rate of about 50% is about right for a good recruiter and Hine is up there with the best. You have good years and bad years. 2014 was bad year. Patrick Cripps you can blame Hine for. And if a player like Scharenberg, Hine recruits, ends up with three knee reconstructions it's not something you can blame Hine for.

Clearly the 2013 draft was a fail.

That being said, it’s Hard to fault Hine picking up Sharenberg… bold given his injury history but, he we have to remember he was touted as the best junior in the country since Judd.

At the time he was a steal at pick 6.

Freeman on the other hand was clearly a miscalculation, yet still found another AFL club prepared to punt on his potential. That would suggest Hine wasn’t alone in his talent assessment of the young man.

Hine still pulled Langdon, Marsh, Oxly and Dwyer from the bleachers in that years draft.

He followed that up the next year by bringing in Degoey, Moore, Maynard, and Cox.

Hine’s failures are magnified much more than his success.

The AFL introduced the supplementary list as it anticipated a lack of player availability for all clubs due to COVID.

Hine did very well to get a such proven AFL campaigner on our ‘reserve’ playing list. Not to mention the importance of having a senior indigenous player/coach in our ranks in the ‘Do Better’ era.

He deserves some props.

Let's also remember that just as players can perform very differently when surrounded by new people and thinking, so too can any employee.

Not to mention the way drafted players are then developed, which is out of the recruiter's hands.

It would be impossible to tell if Hine drafted well in the past and players were then mis-developed and mis-managed, or if Hine himself is now able to do his job properly without giant interfering egos breathing down his neck.

Aside from outright d*heads at one end of the scale or freak individual talent at the other, the organisation has a massive impact on the performance of everyone. The simplest and most vivid example is the improvement in disposal and ball movement this year over last year. But this principle applies to absolutely every employee.

Main points of interest - Hine anticipates taking a first rounder to the draft and all things equal, will select next best available.
A number of our recent draftees have been “ pulled out of the program “ through the course of the season, where they have been re skilled through match sim and development work ( rather than playing VFL ) before coming back in their new role. These players include Draper, who has come back as a midfielder and Harrison and Murley, who had both been trialled in various positions over the year. Hine mentioned Harrison had genuinely been very close to senior selection at start of year but Covid knocked him about for months ( and now has a repeat hammy that’s wiped him out )
He talks a lot about the strengths and areas of improvement required from our recent draft picks. Hines comments on Ginnivan were interesting. He was glowing in praise of Ginivans professionalism and work ethic over the off season and throughout 2022.

COLLINGWOOD will take a targeted approach to this year's Trade Period, with the club not expecting to be as prolific as last off-season when the Pies brought in four new recruits.

Speaking to AFL.com.au's trade and draft show Gettable this week, Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine said the club would continue creating a balance within its list and would adopt a needs-based approach to its targets.

It follows a similar model to last October when the Pies looked to fill specific positional requirements in defence (Billy Frampton), attack (Dan McStay and Bobby Hill) and midfield (Tom Mitchell).

The club also brought through multiple top-30 selections at the draft in Ed Allan (pick No.19) and Jakob Ryan (pick No.2, with the Pies keen to continue blending youth with mature additions.

"I wouldn't envisage four players, no. We were targeted last year, we'll be just as targeted this year. But it wouldn't be the quantum of four players, I wouldn't have thought. Maybe one or two," Hine told Gettable.

"We're just mindful of the Ed Allans and the Jakob Ryans of the world. We want to create the opportunity for them, but also continue to create some balance within the list in terms of our mature-age players.

"Obviously, Scott (Pendlebury) is closer to the end and Steele (Sidebottom) is closer to the end. It's just about being able to address all of those areas." – Riley Beveridge
