It looks likely that stkilda,wet toast and freo may all win less than 5 games and thus make the next draft a real raffle for the other clubs.
I think that would mean that the team finishing 13th would get pick 10 and we wouldnt get a pick until at least 16 or higher.
This means the best available will go elsewhere and we have some young blokes on our list that may have to be traded to get one of those early picks.
Do you think that some of our talented kids will be given up at the end of the year to get a low pick or will we stick with the list we have for this year at least?

I guess the price of success is that you don't get the best draft picks. Don't forget. The price of Josh Fraser was a wooden spoon.

Seriously, I'd rather stick with the talent we've got. Only trade the proven duds or players with serious injury problems. It's better to work with the talent you know you've got, especially young talent, rather than gamble on unknowns.

I think it is true to say that we don't need any new 'draft' players for the next couple of years. Just have the guys we have bond together to play better and better. However what we could do is trade our draft picks to get any rising young star who is unable to break into another club to come across because some old guys are keeping them out (eg Port has 4 *good* ruckmen...if they are all fit, the youngest doesn't get a game)...but make sure they are young tough and fast

Good point Ed. There will still be plenty of good players youd reckon. History tells us lots of top players went in the 30's, 40's and beyond. Its what they pay Judkins and his crew to do. MM seems to have spent a year assessing wot we have, and has recruited to fill the holes. Cant see that kind of method going out the door.

In once sense we were 'lucky' to spoon the year Fraser was due up. The guy will be top notch for ages (and hopefully with the pies all the way).

What would u rather....a spot in the finals or draft picks....i would prefer a spot in the finals. First we either drop or trade:Ukovic,Lane,Dimattina,Wasley,Baynes and Roach. Perhaps even Burns. Then we continue where we left of last year with more great recruiting. Noel Judkins we salute you.

well the whole idea of the game is being to be good enough to get in the finals, which we are pretty close to doing now, therefore so what if we get shit draft picks, we got in the finals and that what matters (this is if we get in of course). the worst place to end up in would be 9th, (though maybe richmond have a permanent reserve on this place) but you get pissed off cos its a matter of so close but still so far away, AND u get shit draft picks.
what about essendon? when was the last time they didnt make the 8? and look how strong their side is.

I don’t think we really need draft picks in a bid to unearth some players. The pies have done exceptionally well in the past few seasons with the draft. players like didak, richards, cloke, shaw et al need time to mature and develop as footballers. we should stick with the plan of using, for want of a better word, “recycled” players from other teams to strengthen and bolster the side, while allowing the young guns to develop. I wouldn’t deal with west coast or fremantle. to get any of their early draft picks would require no less than a tarkyn lockyer, originally from east freo and out of contract at the end of this year, as bait. I would not be happy if tarks leaves (I don’t think he will though).

The beauty with next year is that both bucks and richo will turn 30, therefore they can nominate for the veterans list and effectively free up quite a bit of cash to nab an out of contract player, or sew up those c’wood players who are out of contract this year, namely lockyer, james clement, leon davis, and chad rintoul.

if there’s cash leftover, we may try and plunder an out of contract player from another club. out of contract players include judd lalich, dean rioli (essessdon), ronnie burns (geelong), chance bateman, brett Johnson, luke mcpharlin (hawthorn), winston abraham, matthew burton, clayton lasscock, byron pickett, christian woodley (kangaroos), jeff farmer, alistair nicholson, shane woewodin (melbourne), jarrod schofield (port), darren gaspar (richmond), craig callaghan, tony Delaney, mark gale (st kilda), scott stevens (sydney), ryan hargrave (bulldogs). I have excluded freo and west coast because they have nothing worth plundering.

the big names, if they go, will probably be snapped up by the WA teams, or st kilda. maybe the pies can go for someone like luke mcpharlin, who is a jonathan hay type of player. he can add some depth and mobility to the backline. otherwise the priority would be to sign up all those uncontracted c’wood players and develop what is already a frighteningly awesome list.

lol, i remember when we got molloy, holland, clement, etc u should have seen the whinge everyone had when we got them, but now that they've seen what they can do everyone has woken up to themselves and realise collingwood can actually draft some decent players.

I thought the veteran's list was based on years played / games played, not on chronological age (ie: turning 30).

Anyone help here?

oops...minor mistake on my part. I've just checked the veterans list rules and they are "aged 30 or older, with 10 or more years of continuous service".

so richo (debut 1991) will definitely qualify next year, but bucks (debut 1994 with the pies) will not qualify until 2004, as I presume it's continuous service with the same club.
