Problem with experienced players is they are either way to expensive or not stars - it's stars we need. ONly realistic option may be to grow our own, or trade for promising 2nd year players. Watching the top teams in the finals and how well drilled and organised they are, I'm also starting to wonder about our preparation - eg looking at Mahoney. |

Why the reference to Josh Mahoney?
Josh said in an interview that once he started training at Port, he realised how 'unfit' he was compared to AFL level. _________________ Whale

Well we have done the reverse with some players - Clement, Holland and Wakes spring to mind - but anyway Mahoney was just a side issue, I was mainly talking about how much better trained the top teams look - time will tell whether this is because of the cattle or the sheperds. |

I've heard back from the AFL. The reason the trading period was cut back and is now just one week, was in response to "...the amount of conjecture, speculation and hype that has been generated. Much of this was unsettling and often unfair to players and Clubs."
They must have been reading this BB! _________________ Glory Glory Good Old Collingwood, Glory Glory Hallelujah,

I think that most of the clubs read the BB's. |

Record runs catch the eye at AFL draft camp
By Emma Quayle
Canberra
October 1, 2004
Perth midfielder Nathan Van Berlo and South Australia's Danyle Pierce captured many a recruiter's eye on day two of the AFL draft camp yesterday, setting camp records in the agility run and sprint.
Pierce, a speedy onballer from Sturt, equalled the 2.79-second record for the 20-metre sprint set by Western Bulldog Steven Koops at the 1995 camp.
Richard Tambling, a likely top-five choice at next month's national draft, also equalled Koops' time, before Pierce ran even faster in his second sprint to make the record his own. |

Might be handy to get our hands on one of these pacey kids. _________________ Pies Forever |

Yeah I read that. Pierce just beat Tambling so he must be quick. Tambling will go early, and Deledio (sp?) was third I think, he will go early as well.
Apprently Peirce is really small though. |

Heard on SEN about a psychotic test (not sure if it is called this - but something similar) which assess a player's reflexes and quick decision making. The Brions recruiting officer claimed that Simon Black excelled in this test.
I reckon that is more important than just pure pace (for a midfielder especially) - it's all good being the fastest runner in the league but if you can't win the ball - it won't be much use for a midefielder. _________________ Pies Forever |

Mate, guess who has the record for that physco motor test...
Our old mate Benny Kinnear...
I read it in an old AFL Stats book...
The test mewan diddly squat in isolation. Its how they perform overall...
Admittadly, Simon Black is a Star |
