This was taken from my great book "Collingwood at Victoria Park." A fantastic history on the historic place.

"As a player, you hated to play out there. If you played well against Collingwood in the middle of July, you knew you'd become a man. You had to survive the cold showers after. They used to throw glass on you, and spit on you as you went up the race. Playing against Collingwood at Victoria Park was an education in itself as an opposition player. I got a Police escort out of there once. I dropped a bloke called Russel Ohlsen. I hit him right in front of the members' stand and I looked up and said to them 'Its all right, he's not dead.' They wanted to kill me. After the game in the rooms I went to open the door and there were 20 Collingwood fans waiting to see me. So i thought I better get a Police escort. When we went out they said 'where's your car?' And I said 'not my car, your car.' so I went home in a police van, at least it was safe."

Ahh the Good old days.
