Mummify for Sydney Cup tilt

By Ray Thomas - Fox

TRAINER Lee Freedman is preparing to abandon his Singapore fling with Mummify after the stayer's fighting win at Randwick yesterday.

Freedman said he was more inclined to start Mummify in next Saturday's $800,000 Sydney Cup rather than tackle the Singapore invitational event.

"I'd say if we run in the Sydney Cup, Singapore goes out the window," Freedman said.

"He's fit, in form and right at the top of his game now. We won't have to do much with him for the rest of this week to have him right for the Sydney Cup.

"The Singapore race is still six weeks away, we have to hold him up until then . . . the logistics say, `Let's have a go at the Sydney Cup'."

Freedman's comments came after Mummify scored a narrow win in the Group 2 $350,000 Chairmans Handicap (2600m).

The marathon event turned into a thriller when the two class stayers of the field, Mummify and County Tyrone, staged a straight-long dual.

Mummify ($2.70 fav) finally edged in front of the gallant County Tyrone ($4.60) to win by a short head. They spaced their rivals, with five lengths to Saturday Fever ($21).

Mummify shouldered 60kg yesterday, but drops to 57kg for the Sydney Cup.

Importantly, Freedman's stayer is exempt from rehandicapping after yesterday's win.

It is also significant that Mummify meets County Tyrone 1.5kg better in the Sydney Cup.

County Tyrone had 55.5kg yesterday and drops to 54kg on Saturday.

"I think these two might fight it out again," Freedman said.

"I know Mummify will run the distance (3200m) right out and County Tyrone might improve a little on today's run, too."

Freedman is chasing his second Sydney Cup win after Count Chivas scored in 1996.

cheers bryan..!!
