Distressed Green collapses
By Grantlee Kieza
March 22, 2004

WORLD boxing champ Danny Green pounded out a 10-round decision over rugged Kiwi Sean Sullivan in Perth last night.

But Grren was so overcome with heat exhaustion that he collapsed in his dressing room after the fight and was taken to hospital.

Green, 31, the WBC interim super middleweight champion, won every round of what looked a one-sided massacre but threw so many punches he was a distressed mess covered with ice on his dressing room floor after the bout.

Sullivan, 35, who has made a career out of surviving against some of the world's best boxers, had gone the distance with Green's arch-rival Anthony Mundine last year and Green was determined to knock him out.

But he was left quivering and bewildered at the end of the fight. He needed assistance from the ring and was attended to by the ringside physician.

On Dr Malcolm Rivers' advice, Green was then taken to the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital for observation.

The amazing Sullivan, a fitness fanatic, survived 10 rounds of a brutal assault at the Challenge Stadium in Perth but was remarkably fresh after the fight and leaning towards Mundine to beat Green if ever they meet in the ring.

"Mundine has the edge in speed and boxing skills," Sullivan said.

"I'm glad I went the distance with Danny tonight but I haven't had a fight for a year and I know with a couple of warm-up bouts before this one, I could have made it much closer.

"Danny is a great fighter and a worthy world champion but Mundine is a superman, a great athlete and an incredible boxer."

Green, whose 17 wins in 18 previous fights had all been by knockout, was taken beyond eight rounds for the first time in his career and even though he was still throwing huge punches at the end of the bout, he was emotionally and physically exhausted.

Green was so bewildered he told the sellout crowd of 5200 that he was sorry he had lost the fight but hoped Sullivan would grant him a re-match.

The result, however, was never in question.

Green began pounding Sullivan with huge body shots in the first round and maintained momentum until the end of the 10th.

The judges scored the fight 100-90, 100-89 and 100-88, meaning Green won every round.

The winning fighter said he had been trying so hard for the KO that he felt he had let down his trainer, Jeff Fenech.

Sullivan's trainer, Alex Sua, who beat Tony Mundine, said he felt the great champion's son Anthony would have too many skills for Green and was improving all the time.

"If Danny Green wants to meet Mundine, he must get the fight straight away," said Sua, one of New Zealand's greatest boxers.

"Mundine is improving all the time and in another year or two will be unbeatable.

"Danny Green is a great fighter, very strong, very tough, but he doesn't have the angles that Mundine has and you can see Green's punches coming.

"Mundine is much better on his feet and can hit you with punches that you don't see. Green is much more predictable."

Green and trainer Jeff Fenech were due to fly to New York on Tuesday for talks with leading American promoter Lou DiBella about the prospect of a long-term deal to fight on American television.

Green is scheduled to fight a re-match with German Markus Beyer who he pounded for five rounds last August only to lose by disqualification for the WBC Super middleweight title.

But last night Fenech said he would not allow Green to travel given his physical distress.

Fenech paid tribute to Sullivan as the ultimate warrior and said not even Mike Tyson would have knocked out the sinewy, spindly Kiwi last night.

Sullivan faired much better than the two world champions Green has hammered previously in Beyer and Canadian Eric Lucas.

Perhaps Green collapsed with shock because he heard Mundine would find the gonads to fight him?
