Announced on TFS that there is an allegation of a woman being paid $200,000 to keep quiet over a rape claim,
The paper claims 3 rapists. Until we know the allegations to be true, it's probably best not to name the players...even if they have been named by some media source (they have bigger pockets that us) - bbmods

More to come

$200K for sex assault silence
March 18, 2004
http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,9009624%255E1702,00.html

A WOMAN who claimed she was sexually assaulted by three high-profile AFL players was paid about $200,000 for her silence, two newspapers reported.

The woman complained to police that she was raped and sexually assaulted by the players in bushland near an Adelaide city nightclub, according to reports in the Herald Sun and The Daily Telegraph newspapers.

She named players from Adelaide's Port Power, a Sydney Swans player and the Brisbane Lions as the alleged attackers.

The confidential payment was made more than a year ago after the woman's lawyers sent the players letters of demand as part of a civil action, the reports said.

The letters said the woman had claimed pain and suffering resulting from the alleged attack.

A legal source told the papers: "Three players took part (in the settlement). All three contributed, and the amount was substantial."

The reports said the alleged attack took place early on August 18, 2000, when the then 23-year-old woman went to the west Adelaide nightclub with friends.

She said she had been passed a drink, which she had not asked for, by one of their players.

She told the papers she believed the drink had been spiked because she later kept lapsing in and out of consciousness.

The woman claimed one player asked her if she wanted to go out for a walk, to which she agreed.

"I didn't have a clear head. I still didn't have an idea what was going on," she told the papers.

The woman claimed she was taken to a park and sexually assaulted.

The reports said two of the players were charged with rape eight days later.

It is believed the Swans player was investigated but not charged, the papers said.

Through his lawyers, the Swans player yesterday denied he was interviewed by police.

"He has never been interviewed by police in relation to any sexual assault of any nature at any time," his lawyers told the papers.

The players are believed to have claimed the sexual encounter was consensual, the reports said.

The charges against the other two were unexpectedly dropped five weeks later by the South Australian Director of Public Prosecutions, Paul Rofe, QC.

Representatives of the Sydney Swans and Port Power told the papers that their clubs had not made any payments to the woman.

AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said the league would not comment on the report tonight.

"We have to assess the full story tomorrow morning," he said.

This report appears on NEWS.com.au.

Re your 'window'story Dave. If you name the player sitting in the passenger seat you win the trip to Greece, the Home Computer, the Armani suits and the cash jackpot. If you don't name him,you preserve a Collingwood player's good name.

Just a note: It's not a good idea to post the players names, even if they have been in the Hun, or other places. If this was proven not to be true, even places that 're-produce', or archive reproductions (ie. a bulletin board) are liable. This case differs from that of the St. Kilda case (re: naming of players) because the players consented to be publicly named. Please keep this in mind when you are posting on these subjects. Please..no rumour, and no innuendo. Thanks.

The Sydney player was announced today, and if you want to find out who its is, look on news websites. Anyway, that player said that he only contributed because he wanted to protect his family form the effect that allegations can have (whether they are true or false). Make of that what you will.

Tessa, go to Bigfooty and discuss it then. You are welcome to discuss the issue, but leave out the names. Tessa, just because someone has been charged, does not mean they were/are guilty. I've never seen/heard proof that they were charged (unless I missed something), so until I do, it is nothing but innuendo to me.
