Martin's 6-for rocks South Africa

The Wisden Bulletin

Chris Martin stole the show with a fine exhibition of medium-pace as New Zealand came right back into the match on the second day at Auckland. The last three wickets fell in a hurry, after lunch, with Martin snapping up Neil McKenzie and Makhaya Ntini in the same over. Jacob Oram then polished off David Terbrugge for a duck, after he was dropped off Martin's bowling, and South Africa slumped to 296. Effectively, they had lost 10 wickets for just 119 runs and the game hung in a balance.

New Zealand are 3/201 and in a strong position at stumps, thanks mainly to a sparkling innings from Scott Styris.

He's 118 n.o. from only 138 balls.

Styris made an excellent 170 and McMillan is 61 n.o. at lunch.

New Zealand is only 10 behind and have a real chance to get in a winning position.

Carins is a brilliant hitter.........the over where he took 16 off Pollock was nothing short of breath taking. Hits the ball the hardest out of anyone i have seen.

Yes. Great to see this exciting cricketer back in action. He's had a terrible run with injuries.

In the first Test, he took his first Test wicket for two years. Let's hope he stays injury free and we see him here this summer.

Cairns has blasted this Sth. African attack. As an indication of the extent of his mauling, Rudolph and Smith are bowling.

Cairns is 150 n.o. from 160 balls and Jacob Oram has joined in on the fun. He's 77 n.o. as N.Z. cruise to a 260 run lead.

Well, there you go. Smith got Cairns, for 158. Oram scored 90 before falling to Ntini (3/101)

Their partnership was 225. The N.Z. lead is now a commanding 288 with two wickets in hand and two days to play.

N.Z. all out for 595, a 299 lead. Pollock took 4/113.

Chris Martin gave the Black Caps the best possible start from the first ball. He bowled Smith for a 'golden' !
----------------------------------------------------

1/73 at lunch with Gibbs on 46 n.o.

Gibbs out for 61 and Rudolph is 50 n.o.

Kallis has 3 fours in his 15 n.o. as he sets off on his quest for the 7th. century. The match position is certainly in his favour.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clarification: Kallis has 6 first class centuries in successive matches but 5 in Tests.
