I just read on www.afl.com.au

Quote:
The AFL and associated Club websites will be unavailable from approximately 5am to 10am AEDST this morning. The reason for this outage is to re-launch a new AFL website.

We trust you will enjoy the many benefits the new site will have to offer including improved navigation and layout which will make it easier to navigate your way to the football information you are after.

Apologies for the temporary inconvenience.

Is that the new site up now? If so, it looks pretty much the same, except for the Multimedia thing at the top. What is so 'new' about it?

Read this:

http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=aflmultimedia

Now, unless I'm reading this wrong, after current subscriptions run out, you can't sign back up unless you become a member of Telstra Bigpond. That is pathetic! Internation subscribers can still sign up but if you live in Oz, you have no choce but to become a Bigpond member if you want to access the content.

Quote:
If you are an existing active AFL Telstra Network subscriber, you will continue to have full access to the level of service to which you have subscribed until your subscription expires. If you have full audio and video access, you will still have that until the end date of your subscription. Audio only subscribers will still only be able to access subscriber audio content until the end date of their subscriptions.

Once your subscription expires you can choose to become a BigPond Broadband customer and have full access to all the great AFL multimedia content.

What a joke.

Im still waiting to try and find the "blueprint for football" they released last month. They posted a short version but for a groupo that purports to take a more inclusive role with supporters and members surely the full document should be available!

Well if I'm reading it correctly if I want to access any audio or video content thats not free I have to change to Telstra. I'm not an existing AFLTN member but I do have broadband; its just not with telstra. Frankly I think that sucks because there's no way I'm changing!!

I'm sure there would anti-competitive laws that should prevent the AFL and Telstra from doing this. If not, why not? This move is so anti-competitive it is not funny.

The AFL's website is one of the worst sports sites in the internet. From a marketing, technical, design and content perspective it's pathetic. It isn't user-friendly and almost impossible to navigate. The home page is so cluttered with useless content that it takes forever to download - even if you have broadband.

The biggest joke is that the club sites (which are merely poorly designed templates) receive a share of revenue according to the number of unique hits they each receive. So many clubs or their supporters use software that dynamically reassigns IP addresses and hits their club site many thousands of time per hour.

Meanwhile the AFL, self-deluded as ever, claims to have the most popular internet portal - and they pat themselves on the back thinking it is their great content!

Yep, you couldn't get 2 more incompetent bunches of arseholes than Telstra and The AFL. Put the 2 together and you get the worlds worst sports website.
A few years ago it was quite good, now forget it. Theyre NEVER getting my money.

Does this mean that you get access for free if you are a Bigpond subsciber, if not you will have to pay?
Very confusing, but doesn't suprise me in the least.

If it is true that you MUST be a Bigpond customer to acces the site, then I'm sure the AFL would be upset at that arrangement as it restricts their possible audience.

Eunos, as far as I can tell, you can only access the content (after current subscirptions run out) if you are a Bigpond member, and it will be free for those members. It states on the AFL site that they will be offering exclusive access to Bigpond members. What a joke!

This is typical of the unique form of bastardry that the Offal excel in. I despise Telstra and have no intention of ever using their services. What a great partnership.
