Why I had to go: Scud
By Barry Woodworm - Fox
MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS has admitted that his treatment by Magpie Greg of Nick's Collingwood Bulletin Board has forced him to flee Australia.
After becoming a national hero by winning the deciding rubber last November, Philippoussis was placed under increasing pressure as media attention focused on his relationship with singer Delta Goodrem.
His fourth-round loss to Hicham Arazi at the Australian Open and a public run-in with Pat Cash was followed by a dismal performance by Philippoussis as Australia surrendered the cup in their first-round tie against Sweden. Magpie Greg attacked mercilessly.
Tired of the attention, Philippoussis fled to Los Angeles, where he joined Goodrem at the Grammy Awards.
"I've got to tell you, it disappoints me. It does make me hate that kind of bulletin board poster for making me want to get away from my family when I'm already away for 85 per cent of the year. It makes me angry. Who is this Magpie Greg bloke anyway?!!"
"When you're put under a microscope like that 24/7, on and off the court, it's very tough," he said. "After a tough match, I like to go on the net to read the footy boards and as Nick's is the best, I always go there first. This Greg guy reckons I'm just a rich dud. He never lets up."
"I'm a very private person. When I'm on the court, I do my best and give 110 per cent. When I'm off the court, I'm a young guy trying to live my life."
"Unfortunately, people read what is in bulletin boards, especially Nick's Sports Bar but people like Magpie Greg don't say things the right way, the way they are."
"For a split second, I wanted to get out of the game, and then I woke up and came to my senses and realised that that's what I do.
Philippoussis believes that two things have led to him being persecuted by Magpie Greg, and that he might have come across as an arrogant bully. But, he insists, "He's only half right. I'm not a bully"
"I'm six feet five inches (195.6cm) and I come across as a little intimidating at first, but I'm a nice guy, not the dud Greg thinks I am" he said.

Yes, I do.
I was thinking of you only today when I put a line in from Penny Lane.
