Post subject: WHO WE GOT IN THE DRAFT! | |
|
17. Collingwood – Bill Morrison
(North Hobart) 6 June 1986, 193cm, 90kg
Tall, inside key forward who kicked nine goals on debut for North Hobart seniors aged 14. Can play back if needed. AIS-AFL Academy member in 2003. Had an interrupted year with injury. North Hobart FC.
32. Collingwood – Brayden Shaw (Northern Knights)*
35. Collingwood – Brent Hall- (South Fremantle)
(South Fremantle) 7 January 1986, 198cm, 94kg
After the versatile Bradley, the most sought after ‘traditional’ ruckman in this year’s National AFL Draft is the emerging Hall. A Western Australian co-vice-captain at this year’s National AFL under 18 championships, he will figure prominently in the first round, due to the lack of genuine young ruckmen. Adelaide has also declared its interest in Hall, having openly admitted that it wants to bolster its rucks/talls department, but with Fremantle having two selections before the Crows, the Dockers are likely to pounce on one of their most promising home grown talents. They too are looking to form one of the most formidable rucking combinations in the competition and Hall fits that into that criteria.
48. Collingwood – Heath Shaw (Northern Knights)*
60. Collingwood – Julian Rowe
(Oakleigh Chargers) 25 May 1985, 186cm, 72kg
Medium, outside midfielder who finds space well. Kicks the ball accurately on both sides and is a clean ball handler. Athletic type who is strong overhead. Vic Metro U/18 representative in 2003. From Carey Old Boys FC. |

Glad we grabbed a tall forward as we lack depth...
Glad we grabbed another ruckman to help out in case Richards and Cloke don't take the next step over the next couple of years... And to see him listed as a first round candiate is great...

Pick 32 for Brayden is a steal - almost makes me feel dirty. Heath is also worth it but will take a little longer to develop according ot most people, Brayden will ocme along very nicely once he picks up the pace of AFL, like as not MM will play him in willy for most if not a full year ala Cloke, Dids etc. for development.
Very happy to have him on board

Scotland for a ruckman.... well what do you know.
Could the recruiting department actually know what they are doing...
Hell no. Of course not.

Spot on Cam. Good move, I reckon, we need talls, and have plenty of small midfield types, so probably a good idea to go for a tall. |

what a load of crap this recruiting season has been. anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant.
we dont need any more 'promising youngsters'! we needed experience for depth. we have no depth at all, if two players get injured i think we will be forced to play rookies. all we have at our club are maturing youngsters and promising rookies. this doesnt win flags, we are almost beyond the rebuilding phase, we need cream now to win the flag.
i do realise that rebuilding is a continuous state, but only one or two young players should be blooded at a time in order to avoid disasters like the grand final (*sobs*) i fear that we will be stagnant this year as i hear that we will be introducing even more rookies, ie. cam cloke, davidson, king, etc. these players will also need a few seasons to mature, and so the cycle is seemingly going :S
nevertheless, go the pies!
cheers, omar _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. When I rise it will be with the ranks... - Eugene Debs |

well that makes me ignorant.
change for changes sake is bullshit.
great teams take time to grow.
bucks may not be around for our glory years.
but being an ignorant person let's look at some recent flags.
90 a few old pies like daicos, banks, shaw, bars, mors, low-mid 20s like rowdy, mcguane, pants, ned, christian, crosisca, kids like scotty russell, francis, monkey, wrighty
91 old hawks with kids like pritchard, dunstall
92 94 young eagles with worfold, mcintosh, heady, matera, kemp.
93 baby bombers with kids like hird, mercuri, long, misiti, olarenshaw.
95 blues led by low-mid 20s like manton, mckay, allan, ratten, kouta
96 kangaroos led by low-mid 20s kids like mckernan, carey, stevens, archer, freeborn
97 98 crows led by low-mid 20s like roo, bickley, mcleod
99 older kangaroos
00 older dons
01 mid-late 20s lions
02 older lions
03 30 yr old lions
when the Lions finally crack they have jack shit to come in. Their last few drafts have been duds.
hopefully keeping our kids together after such a GF defeat will auger well for this year. They have to repay the faith. |

i dont disagree with the 'change for changes sake' stuff cam... im not advocating wiping out the squad or anything like that, i just think we needed more experience inputted into the 42, not neccessarily in our top 22, but at least to provide depth and experience around the club. we have no depth at all and that is undeniable! _________________ I would be ashamed to admit that I had risen from the ranks. Gee that's a bit harsh, looking through the Williamstown GF side I reckon we finally have some depth after a decade in the wilderness! I can't believe we picked up Brent Hall, and after the disappointment of trade week reckon we will go forward. _________________ Buon Giorno |

The sheriffe don't like it, rock the casbah rock the casbah. (Am I the lucky 100th poster to lay that joke down?)
In all seriousness how were we to draft quality experienced players at the draft? We do that during the trade period if we are lucky to do a deal. We didn't. Look on the bright side most champion teams are made from this draft and not the retreads draft or even the trade period. Put them into the team structure at an early age, get them playing great footy and keep the nucleus of the team intact for several years and you have a team that will be top flag contender nay winner. _________________ Chuffed to have seen 3 flag wins in my lifetime but still greedy for more. |
