Time for Draft to go

With so many players experienced players getting dictated to where they should play, it's time to remove the draft or to place a clause that after a certain amount of years at a club like an apprenticeship you have the choice where you go wish to go to if you are not happy where your playing.

The salary cap will keep who goes where in check as it does in rugby as well you increase the penalties for breaching the salary cap as well.

Clubs are being rewarded for mediocrity and hard working clubs are being penalised under the current system.

Compensation may be a sticking point, but if a player does not wish to play for you, you should be asking why not bitching why they wish to move on. Rolling Eyes

Spot on culprit why reward mediocrity the Afl should reward the teams who make the finals

Concept seems fine, Culp. Don't know if abolishing the draft would be viable, but the free agency after 5 yrs service has merit. As you have stated, a resonably set but vigorously policed salary cap is a very strong check on the system.

The draft is not rewarding mediocrity it helps level the playing field out ... Look what it has done for us since 99 it has made us a top four team instead of a lower half of the ladder side!!!

But I do admit that there should be a limit on it for example 3 years not like St.Kilda who have been there for the last four to five years...

Otherwise you would have clubs like West Coast, Essendon, Adeaide and us just going out and buying players!!! Because we are in a strong financal postion...

And...

To me that is not an even comp!!!!

The system itself is fine but it does show up some inequities. St Kilda is a classic example where they have for years been a lowly placed club, receiving the best young talent in the country but staying a bottom team. They are being rewarded for mediocrity and poor player management decisions.

The other thing that seems ridiculous to me is Carlton, a club caught seriously rorting the system, can receive a priority pick and effectively get the second best young player in the country when they aren't entitled to a first or second round pick. To me that shows that the system should be reviewed.
