THE Wayne Carey showdown with his old club might have been the one everyone was talking about, but the game with the largest TV audience was last year's Grand Final rematch.

In ratings figures released by the AFL yesterday, the Collingwood-Brisbane rematch on Easter Thursday night at the Gabba proved the most popular. It just bumped out the biggest grudge match in footy when Carey and the Crows took on the Kangaroos.

The Roos' emotional Jason McCartney comeback game was the fifth-highest rating game. Magpie matches against Adelaide and Essendon (Anzac Day) were third and fourth.

AFL commercial operations manager Ben Buckley said overall the crowds were up about 100,000 this year on the corresponding time last year, and TV ratings were also higher.

"I know there has been some discussion about the impact of television on crowds, but certainly crowds are up and television ratings are up, so that's a good thing," Buckley said.

"In the five capital cities around the country, television ratings are up about 5 per cent."

When Fox Footy audiences (about 80 to 100,000 a match) were built in, it took the total viewing figure beyond four million a round.

AFL football operations manager Andrew Demetriou said the league was on budget to record a $4.4 million profit.

Everyone of our games is on free to air television,along with Essendons.What does this tell you.
Often opposition supporters complain because of this,the diffrence is Collingwood people not only goto the games,but those that dont watch the pies on tv.
Its about ratings ie getting bums on seats to see the ads between the footy and most teams do not rate.
They only have themselves to blame.

LOL stupid AFL wat did they expect Pies fans NOT to turn up to their teams matches?

We have the most passionate most reliable fans in AFL and the hatred thrown at us brings us closer together!!

They sure will.....and the crows will be completeing a 4 week period of leyland like travelling...round 16: WA, round 19: WA and round 20: Telstra Dome against us.

We all know that without Collingwood the AFL would be broke and non existant!
